How to tell sex of Discus?

I see many picktures and people saying "this is my male" ect. I thought that with angelfish and Discus the only sure way to tell sex was to watch them breed. Is there a way to tell by fin shape or ?? thanks; Don T.

Hi Don...

There are indicators some use such as fin shape and angle, distance between pelvic and anal, etc. But these only give an experienced breeder a slight advantage in sexing a discus. The only sure way is to observe them spawning.

Thanks; I've had fish for over 50 years. I used to be fairly accurate on Angles but never on Discus. I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss something. Don T.
