I got one! And over the last few months, he got uglier, I swear! He is the Blue Snake Skin up in front of the rest:eek:
Trust me ~
He looks better in these pictures!
But I love him! The worst part is he or she, is over, way over, two years old and the smallest in the tank! Eyes are big too!
He is sooooooooo pointy and small....lol! But hella mean! He and Ms. Pringles HATE each other! I have four that are my first ~ over two years but they are twice as big!
I think too, I have nicer ones to compare him too, lately and wow...he is really a stuned runt!
The Manage Attachment Button won't work:( I will do it another way;)
This was a few months ago....

This was June of last year: Actually looks less ugly!

But the second pic is older, Terry! lol! And he is butt oogly now as I just finished my wc!
I've got two and one is a site for sore eyes.

We don't know what happened with the leopard she use to be so pretty and colorful. Then she started laying eggs to young and her mate died and then she turned this shape and brown in color. And then the god awful snowflake.

Marie,
It's a bit beaky but other than that not a terrible SS, what do you see wrong with it?
Tiffany,
OMG, your fish is swimming upside down! Oh wait... it's just it's reflection... nevermind.
I would post one, but it's not my fish and a certain Island would kill me if I did.

Larry! lol! You are so funny:D He looks much better...wait!...worse, in person, trust me!! Beaky is an under - statement ~ arrow is more appropriate!
Tiff! That poor snowflake! I had one too and I found him a new home ~ did not much care for the blotchy markings!

Well,
They are definetly not grade A, but I would not call them ugly.... I have seen far far worse than those.
Marie,
Your Snakeskin looks like a female to me. and I used to have one with a very similar color and shape....It was not the most attractive fish out there... but I crossed it with a wild green and got some of the most beautiful F1s I have ever bred...
Keep in mind... phenotype..what something looks like, and Genotype what something is genetically coded for...aren't always the same thing.

You don't say, Al! Good to know as she isn't going anywhere...you wouldn't have some pictures of the ss and the F1s, would you?
I would like to see a pair and then what they produced, then 6 months later....and then one year later ~ all this in just a few pictures, am I making any sense? Oh, and the 6 month picture next to one of the parents...or both, both of the parents, actually!
That is my plan:) A thread actually:D
Keep in mind... phenotype..what something looks like, and Genotype what something is genetically coded for...aren't always the same thing.
Interesting....and a tad bit of info I shall remember ~ She has got to be ready for spawning soon and there are three others her age!
Thanks, Al!

Here are my uglies- Mr and Mrs Speckle. They're stunted, got big eyes, pointy faces and razor sharp foreheads. If they were human they'd be supermodels!
Only had them four months but for two of those they were black with speckles and so skinny their bones were poking out. Many times I was so frustrated with their lack of progress I wanted to throw them out.
But they never gave up and I love em for that. Now they are laying regularly and trying their hardest to be good parents despite being in a community tank with giants. (Mrs wouldn't make it to three inches along the ruler, and Mr only just pips it)

H
Poor Chuckie died, he just stopped growing and didn't make it (for those who don't know about Chuck, "he" was named by Squiggy and was one of the fry two of my Turqs threw, terribly misshapen but with a great personaltiy). Unfortunately I don't have any photos, he would have won any "Ugliest Discus Award" hands down though, which to me, gave "him" a kind of charm in itself.

Boy I wish that I still had some of my pics from the early 90's, I had a discus that would of won this hands down and I had him for 6 years because I knew I probably wouldn't see one like this again, he had 2 tails. Yes you read it correctly "2 tails". Don't ask me what happened but it came from one of my batches and right at the base of the body it forked off and had 2 tails. Was really neat looking and never showed any ill effects, but he was the quickest discus in the tank. :D

Hi Al,
Your wild cross Discus in photos post #13 are interesting. They remind me of the domestic blue discus of 1970 but with better form.
I guess I understand where you are coming from but for a cross from one wild parent I think they inherited enough of the wild look that they are still attractive in an understated way.
It was experiments like yours that helped develop the modern fish in the first place.

Well, I smacked him in the head once while he was feasting and I guess he learned something. He guarded the eggs for almost 4 weeks after that. Never did attempt to fertilize anything though :D

Why would anyone purchase something that looked like that to begin with? Even someone with limited experience with discus or fish in general should be able to see that this is a very sick animal. That one is leading the ugly race up till now. :D

You're right- unhealthy/neglected is quite a different thing to aesthetically "ugly". Perhaps we should start another thread titled "most neglected lfs discus".
I visited a prominent lfs today that keep a tank of adult hand-me-downs for sale and the disease levels left me shocked and disgusted. If they kept their fluffy mammal pets in anything like this condition the animal protection authorities would have them in jail. Makes my blood boil.
