I have 4 discus in my 75 gallon and 3 of them have recently started laying eggs on the leaves of my swordplants. None of these look like they have reached their maximum size. Is it normal for them to start laying eggs when they are not fully grown?

Yup.

And if you want them to continue to grow, you may want to separate them as they tend to slow or stop growing once they start spawning.

I actually have no intention of breeding them, was going to add 3 more, hope they will keep growing though...

Adding 3 more is fine just try to keep the 3 new ones around the same size as your others.

will this not work if they are smaller?

The only problem you may run into is the smaller ones will get picked on by the bigger ones. Of course this would be a 50/50 chance but staying with discus around the same size would be the better bet.

You will also want to quarantine your new fish prior to introducing them to your tank. 4-6 weeks is what I recommend.

I was actually planning on doing that so I can beef them up before I transfer them with the other ones.
