I was just wondering if anyone else can see how certain fish at different times are more desirable. The Breeders seem to be rite smart in the marketing of these fashionable fish. Any who. Happy WC

Hey Tommy! Welcome to "SD"! :)

I can think of a great example: I never cared for heckels at all. I mean I just never saw anything desireable at all. I was the more colorful blues, reds kinda guy.

I took a recent trip over to the brewmasters house, and that pretty much got wheels turnin in my head! I immediately got thinkin biotope. Kinda in the same lines...A lil different.http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?t=58128

Then Steves got a tank like this.http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?t=58151 I said to myself. "How desireable is that"??

Then you look at these desireable fish...http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?t=54156

Then there are the sponsors here with IMO have the most desireable fish...

I dont think there is a time when someone doesnt find other fish more desirable. The breeders here are always lookin for more desireable fish!! :)

I think the breeders drive whats popular. For instance..ABD's recently...everyone saw them and wanted them. Now cerulean or palomino.....WB's...RGD's..spots....rings..Albino X anything, etc. Big breeders drive the new fad. They sure are PURTY though. The new thing is the most sought after. I however have been swayed over to the good ole wild look as of late. Something about the pure look of how things started is appealing after being in a hobby for a while. For me, Its like cars..anyone could go by a 2007 corvette but not everyone has or can get a 64 vette (classic) but I also like my brand new truck :) I wish I had the room, time, resources, money, etc to breed on a large scale and introduce some new fad in discus. How cool would that be? Without the big breeders paving the way, the discus hobby wouldnt be what it is.

I think the fancy discus are beautiful but if it ever came down to only wild type or fancy discus I will choose the wild type discus every time.

I am hoping more of us breed and maintain the classic species so we can have them without importing only wild caught fish. They do take longer to develop their colors but the end results are worth some patience.

The fancy discus will always be available but the someday the wilds may not.
Oh yeah, my Heckels live in saltwater too according to the casual viewers.

If I had a private tank......only wild or wild types.

A good friend of mine has a 1600 gallon tank, full live plants, all Amazone, I almost begged him to put only Alenquers and Santarem in, maybe a few Red Turquoise and Brilliant but that's it.

But big NO he wanted Pigeons, Diamonds, etc. all sparkling colors, made me almost cry.

I've a picture on my Desktop of his tank, I can't post them (yet) because there is going to be an articel about the tank, but I still think it's a shame,

Having kept and bred discus for 2 decades now i have seen fashion come and go with discus, my feeling is the market is driven by color and price. Wilds will always have a special place in the tanks of advanced hobbiests, but i have a feeling the progeny would have to be almost given away to move them on. i breed browns maybe twice a year to satisfy that market, yet i am constantly breeding rt's and blues and other fancy types. The browns i have to practically beg people to take and they are very good quality browns, but they are not wilds so do not suit the advanced hobbiest, and begginners and casual hobbiests want more colored fish and don't buy them. I have a feeling that no matter who breeds them the person who loves wilds will not buy aquarium bred strains even if they are only f1 or f2's afterall where is the challenge in that, so imo to think that by breeding wilds we are saving them is a joke. The only way i can see to save that market is too save the natural enviroment and let nature get on with its breeding program.
Breed as much color as you can, no matter what the market trend, colorful discus always sell fast.
