I am in the process of setting up a second discus tank, and would like to know if it is a problem ordering fish by mail in the winter months.I ordered my first fish by mail and it was warmer out. There was also a hot pack in the box. I really dont want to chance dead or sick fish. There arent any quality bredders I know of in the Long Island New York area.If anyone has experience in this area Id like to hear from you.

If you get them from an experienced breeder/shipper, then they pack well with heat packs.
I have recieved fish in cold weather from Cary at GLD and from AL (brewmaster15) and had no problems at all.

Ask the shipper to place more heat packs. Let him/her know your concerns.
Last time I got my order, there were 4 heat packs in the box. I assume you want more in your case.

If shipping would be a problem in the winter, I could close my business. We ship boxes out now with 2 heat packs, the amount of heat packs doesn't matter as long as you do it the "Cary way" (the friend who teached me how to ship concerning heat packs)
All Discus (and we ship a "few") come in fine,
Hans
