I would like to start off this thread to let everyone that has helped me a big thank you. I have decided I am no longer going to keep discus. It just wasn't ment to be. Last night during a snow storm here in michigan a group of people broke into my house and few others and stole things from me. But not only did they steal they took a hammer to my aquarium. 1 week prior to a finished cycle. My floor is damaged and needs work. This is most depressing. But I thank all of you for your help and time. I will still be intouch.
Regards,
Todd

I hope they get what's coming to them. People can be so cruel it just makes me sick. Try not to let them/this change who you are and best wishes to you and yours.

Before you give up give it a few days............
You are making this decision based on first emotion which is understandable.
Yet, I want to encourage you to think about this some more and ask yourself this question in the next few days...
They already stole things you worked hard for.
They ruined your dream of keeping discus.
Question to ask yourself is.........
If I quit now will I be letting them also steal from me my future enjoyment of keeping Discus?
That is something only you can control.
You can let them do it, or pick up the peices and when finances allow to get back in the game.

Todd,
That is absolutely terrible..:( I agree with Greg though...postpone but don't give up your dreams because if you do they not only took your stuff..they took your dream...
Get yourself straightened out with damage... check with your homeowners or rentors insurance and get that taken care of.... When you get back on your feet over this..let me know and I'll help you see that discus dream come thru...If not with something I have here...than with something from the amazon;) just don't give up now.

Todd take some time before you make a final decision.
listen to Al and Greg.
This sounds like something kids would do. I would think an adult crook would just go in take what he wanted and get out. Do the Police have any ideas?
Ray
That is absolutely SICK !
I'm so sorry this happened to you........
I hope that things will be back to normal for you soon, and those demented people are caught..........

Todd, I'm sorry to hear about what happened, but please don't let them control your life this way. If you let their sick actions make you give up, then they have won and have stolen even more from you, your enjoyment of keeping Discus. Why give them that, as well?

Todd, I can only add my sympathy's to what the other have said.
I too agree with Greg on this, give it some time.
What these "people" have done is unquestionably wicked and evil. Sooner or later they will get what is coming to them.

*&^%$#@! A similar thing happened to my friends' shop; some punks broke into the shop and only stole a few thing, but decided it would be more "fun" to damage several of the goods in the store! The worst part was that the punks were only teenagers and after they'd been caught, their penalty was... to miss their graduation ceremony!?!?! What type of justice is that?!?! No community service, nothing!
Check if your insurance can help, don't let those punks wipe out your dream!

That is really awful...so sorry to hear about that. I echo others' sentiments...don't rush to a decision while your emotions are high. Take some time to put things in the past and think about it again after you have recouped.

sorry to hear. it does make you feel like you have been invaded..and the worst is they hurt something you loved.
about a month ago..i had a breakin in the middle of the nite..threw a rock through my door...but..they didnt touch my tanks..i was upstairs..had to go down and scare them off. if i wasnt there..who knows. im buying a doberman to sit at my door. but that is my fear..i dont care if they take things..just dont hurt my fish or my dogs. or me.
id take greg and als advice..if your putting in a claim for your floor..id`put in for your tank etc also..and start over. just a delay.
so..go buy a doberman..and a new tank. keep in touch..and dont give up your dream.

So sory to here that:(. A fw years ago was in Slovenia a huge story about three juveniles from rich respected families who horrendously tortured and killed about 60 cats and wrote down every detail. Their pennalty to was just, that they did not graduated at theit school, but later on other high school. And their parents had a nerve to preach about the media hike, taht was upon their percious children. I am ethical guy with deep respect of human rights. But if i met them that year blood wpold flow definetelly:argue::angry:

I'm very sorry to hear this.
I know how you feel. It is absolutely sickening. We were burglarized last yr and they destroyed some of our stuff, stole my wedding ring, stole my sons hard earned money......
It really got me down for a long time.
I hope you can get through it, regroup and forge ahead again.
Don't give up, there are many many good people too. :) Pick up the pieces and try again. Eventually it gets a little easier to deal with. You never forget the feeling though.
take care
all the best to you!

Hi Todd,
At the risk of sounding like an echo... Please don't allow this act of violence to continue to erode your life. It is awful that these people, obviously disturbed and tormented by their own demons, have victimized you. It is sad that you have damage to recover from. But as a former victim of violence, I know that the way to get through this and the way to transcend this, is to acknowledge the set back, acknowledge the frustration, anger and hurt and even the fear that accompanies such an event and then... move on with your dreams still intact. My experience here at Simply tells me that there is a great deal of generosity and that when you are ready, there will be a lot of help to get back on the road to realizing your dream of discus keeping.
Stay strong brother...

Hi all.
Thanks for your kind words. I guess your all right and I just need to start over. I was just so close. Maybe a week away, and after months of work and every dime I spent on this.... now I have to save up and buy a new tank just makes me so sad. I guess I will have to be on the look out and try to get a good deal. I have already paid for some discus.... I just hope he will keep them a month or 2 longer. But thanks everyone again in my time of sadness.
With Thanks,
Todd

Great to hear, Todd. I can sympathize with you. Years ago my car was stolen out of my parents' driveway. Instead of just taking what they wanted out of it, they drove it out to the lake and torched it. Some fishermen found it burning along the shoreline, thinking it was a bonfire out of hand.
You may try Craigslist.org to find a reasonably priced aquarium in your area. I do hope to see you rise above this and succeed.

Hi all,
I am updating on everything that is going on. I am still thankful for all of the support and offers of help everyone has mentioned. It's great to know that people who support this hobby...are in fact great and caring people. It lets me know that this kind of hobby brings out the positive in people...as I was hoping this tank would create for myself and my home. Thank You!
As for my insurense....It seems they aren't going to cover it. I keep getting the run around about it...and If they were going to cover it they make me feel like I will have to pay them more to put that into being covered, and the co-pay would be insaine...let alone they are saying I should have had some sort of flood coverage for this type of thing. I just don't get it. Vandals....are driving me mad! Here is a pic I took with my phone real quick. I get to stare at it everyday in my living room :(

Why are there people like this out there? Stealing is bad enough but why causes more damage? Idiots!

The most important thing is that you and your family are safe. Don’t give up Discus, because sometime starting fresh can be exciting experience.

Hi all,
I am just taking some time out of my Christmas day to write in this thread that started out... well very unhappy. I wanted to take advantage of this thread to thank everyone for making thid time of year much more than what it would have been for me. To all of the people I don't even know that are willing to give help to someone they no nothing about. That is what Christmas is all about. :) Every person I have met here on the Simply thread has been willing to help no matter what....and everyone in the Discus hobby outside of this thread I have met have been helpful as well. It just reminds me that this hobby is a great hobby not only because of the discus themselves...but the people who are in it. So to all that are helping me...thanks for reminding me of that. Most of all not to give up. So with a very special thank you to all that have helping me get back on track. A warm Merry Christmas from me and my family. May your karma come back to you 10 fold. I will do my best to pass forth as well.
Merry Christmas!
Todd
P.S. When I finally get everything rolling again I will post updates :)

Ouch, sorry to hear about your troubles. You shop at anchor bay, I'm guessing? How big was your tank? You should definitely try craigslist. Also, you need to put on some gaiters, find those punks, and show their insides some style.

Yes I do shop at Anchor Bay! My tank was a 75 gallon with built in over flow. I have been checking out craigs list. A lot of them are selling the whole set ups. I am trying to slavage what I can of my recent set up. Regardless if I find them or not....karma is real to me. What goes around comes around....and I'm sure they will get theirs. I know that's an old saying...but I have seen it happen a hundred times. But I'll keep my eyes peeled. Thanks for your advise!

Just an update for everyone. I have gotten my new tank today :) I want to thank everyone for being so supportive. All the kindness and support put me into overdrive with getting back on track. I have done the repairs necessary to my stand and salvaged and replaced the wood parts that needed to be replaced. I made this my mission the day after Christmas. As for the floor, I pulled it up and threw down some new plywood. The carpet was professionally cleaned. So yay I got to start setting it up today. I rinsed it out real quick to get the dust out of it and put it on the stand. I just have a few plumbing pipes to run for the filter before I kick on the filters. Thanks again everyone! I have recieved the donations in the mail, and through paypal. When I got a donation in the mail from overseas...it was a reminder that I need to get things really going, not just for me, but for everyone helping me :) Here are some pics! Thanks everyone on simply!!!
