i was wondering if there is enough bacteria in my tank
im getting 5 discus for my tank soon
and im trying to avoid a recycle of the tank(if thats possible)
55 gl tank with tetras and 4 juv kribs
so with adding 5 discus to the tank
would things go off balance?
ive always had aquariums with no problems (ya right) but never put that many fish at once
am i at risk of anything?
or would the religious water changes take care of my paranoia and any ammo spikes or what nots

do you guys get what im saying
or is this just another noobie who needs to bonk himself in the head
just say the word

Perfectly reasonable question :)

The fish you have now will have caused bacteria to colonize the filter but not well enough to cope with the sudden addition of 5 big ( ? ) Discus.

You will probably get an ammonia and nitrite spike but it shhould not be a problem if you remember your water changes ( say 50% ) The bacteria should catch up within two or three days I believe.

When you do your large daily wc's make sure to use a dechlor that has an ammonia detox in it. Either AmQuel or Prime would work and most lfs have one or both.

You can also use Stability by Seachem. Place the fish in your tank and then add Stability according to the directions. I've used it successfully when adding fish and had no spikes whatsoever. Just to be sure though, make sure to test your water params at least daily.
