View Full Version : Rubbermaid 50 Gal. Roughneck W/Wheels For Storage

I purchased yet another storage tank due to leakage on the last one. This time I purchased a 50 gal Rubbermaid Roughneck with wheels. I filled it 3/4 full and it appears to be putting a lot of stress on the wheels and axel. I will not attempt to move it when full, but has anyone had experience with this type of garbage can for storage? Can it be filled to capacity without problems?

Thanks,

Bill

I have found the rubbermaid BRUTE with a wheel set made by the same company is very strong . I think is only 44 gallons.

Thanks Roberto. I think I'm going to the farm suppy store tomorrow if they are open to get a different tank for water storage. This trash can has me worried.

I had one for awhile and the wheels/axle seemed fine. It did eventually end up with a small leak around the handle that's midway down on the front. It only lasted a few months I'd say before it sprung the leak. I use the food grade plastic 55 gallon drums for water storage now.

Hello Bill. I have a 96 gallon trash can called a TOTER I got from Lowes. This thing is wheeled and its tough, very tough. I fill it to the brim and it doesnt bow at all. It also has a 10 year warranty. Maybe a little pricey at $86.00 but its worth the peace of mind. There is a website for it which is www.toter.com

I also really prefer the 55 gallon food grade barrels.

I used to buy them from a 7-Up bottling plant for $5 apiece when I lived in Michigan. I just found a local source for them but it's not anywhere near as cheap.

I called our local Coca-Cola vendor today and they referred me to another town. There must be a source in the town I live in.....just need to do more research.

Bill,

If you have the one I think you do (mine's white-clear with wheels), I have used one of these (as a tank SHHHhhhh) for several years. You have to make sure that it's in a spot that you will not ever move it when there's water in it. You can fill it all the way up (I used to fill it to about 2" down from the very top). It has never shown any sign of stress other than the sides bow out a slight amount once there's a lot of water in the tub. So, I can't see a problem with using it for water storage.

Hi Lisa,

The one I have is brown. I emptied it last night and visited the local farm supply store today. They had their stock tanks on sale so I bought one that holds 75 gallons. It had a leak at the outlet valve at the bottom, so I replaced the valve with one of those expandable rubber corks. No more leakage now.

The next step is to fashion a cover of some sort. That should be easy.

Finally, a storage tank that should last! With more storage capacity I can get more tanks too :rolleyes2:

Thanks for all the advice everyone. This is a great forum!

A round container with a flat bottom (cylinder) will distribute the stress more even than a rectangular container. Don T.

How's the tap water in Windom? Mine is liquid rock:smash::smash: R/O all the way with the help of Buckeye Field Supply!:)

Wow someone somewhat near to me for once! The tap water here is liquid rock as well and high pH. I don't use R/O though since I don't have any breeding and they do just fine. :)

Awesome Karen. I wish I could get by with tap water, but it's around 650 ppm with a high pH. Do you think Discus could survive in it?

Thanks,

I have no idea what the ppm of my tap is, I don't even have a TDS meter or anything. I just know the GH is way up there. My pH is 8.2 out of the tap and honestly I don't have issues with it. I actually don't even treat my water with anything, just age, heat and aerate. I don't have chloramines. I truly think your discus would be fine in tap water, but if you were to switch do it very slowly since they are used to straight RO. How many discus do you have? Are you new to them or been keeping them awhile? (Sorry if you've said all this already and I've just missed it!)

ETA: I found a conversion from GH to ppm and it seems like my water is around 537 ppm, so yours is higher I guess.

I have five Red Turks. They're between 5" and 6". As far as my experience with these fish....well, way back in the 80s I had two browns and a royal blue. I had no idea how to take care of them and they eventually died. I swore that I would never try to keep them again. Then one day the bug hit me again and I got the ones I have now. Have had these almost a year with no problems thanks to this forum and some expert advice from someone in Mpls. I think the 100% wc every other day or so has something to do with it. They're pigs! Two have paired off and have spawned. Hopefully some day we'll have some babies here.

What kind of Discus do you have?

Just got back from spending the week in TN and I literally felt your pain :) Glad to be back in Florida where it's at least semi-warm. Have to go back next week, hopefully it will warm up a little before then.

Did you get your turks from a local source? The only "expert" I know of in Minneapolis is Willie Loh, but I know there are more discus keepers in the area as well. :)

Glad to hear they're doing well. Since you've got a pair, might as well just keep them in the RO then. I bet though if you successfully got a spawn you could raise them up in your tap water.

A better question might be what kinds don't I have? :) The main ones I have are some Leopards, some blue fineline snakeskins, some Ocean Greens, some very nice red melons I got from Dan and Al here on the forum and of course the alenquer challenge fish. I've got a few other odd and end ones too.

Hi Karen,

I didn't get my fish from Willie, but he's been very helpful as far as advice on water change regime and food.

If I ever get a batch of babies I'll try raising some of them in the liquid rock.

Sounds like quite the variety at your house. Someday I'd like to get some wilds, Royal Blues or Tefe Greens. I'll need a bigger water storage tank though

Take care,

Bill

Hi Al,

I grew up in St. Paul. That city has some nice soft water for raising fish.

The water out this way is full of magnesium, calcium, etc. We go through a water heater every other year or so and we have a water softener! I guess that's typical for these parts.

Are you a member of the Frostbite Falls Discus Club?

I've been to alot of frostbite meetings, and have had alot of them at my house.....
I have been preivleged to have Cary Strong,Enchanted Joe, Jeff Young and Hans all at my house at one time or another for discus meetings, that was probably one of the neatest things for me is meeting alot of great people and never haveing to leave home...

By the way I install water heaters I'm a plumber call me next time( just kidding) to far to drive

Dottie, just go to a Home Depot. They have the Paloma tankless water heaters ,wait until they give you 10 % discount when you open an account with them , get the big size one for more than one user at a time( $999.00 ) . They have very able installers (even in TN ) . You get a $300.00 tax break incentive now . Put it in a wall you can exhaust from , that way is a lot less expensive to install ($279.00 venting installation kit).
I have always wanted one but I am going to go with a 12 year High Effiency 50 gallon gas one , can not afford the Tankless now. Always wanted one . I hear that you spend about 30% utilities on the water heater, maybe the savings with the Tankess can be almost 20% of the expense .
At least we got to see Cary, Jeff and Hans in Texas in the same room ;)

Looking foward to see you at Atlanta this year !
