Heres some pics of the royal blue discus from Darren. At first they were a little slow to eat and were quite timid. My guess is the change of water conditions took a little getting used to, i inspected stool samples from these fish and found nothing remarkable. Also the breathing rate appeared normal and i didn't notice any stratching or other behavior which would indicate parasites. Now they are eating very well and appear to have adjusted to my care. They are around 55mm sl, at receiving they measured 45mm sl to 48mm sl. Foods they are accepting are fbs, fbw, live insect larvae, sera discus granules (normal type). They are still a little hesitent on my home made mix (Darren, what is in your mix...crab eggs and fillet steak? :) )

Hi Rod. Thanks for the report. Your fish look great. I liked the last photo, particulary the fish on the left. Mine aren't as keen on FBH, as they are with FBW and FBS, which they are now taking two cubes of per feed. I am still persisting with FBH which is their first feed every morning. Looking forward to your next report.:)

Well, I've been missing the "control fish" due to my stupidity !
And you have Royal Blues !
Very prety fish you've got there, all looking great.
Glad they are eating well for you now.
There will be some monster fish come of this contest !
keep up the good work -

sorry guys, what's a royal blue? made up of what type of strains? sorry!

No need for sorry....

Royal blues are wild type discus. They are developed using the blue discus. When the name royal is attached to a wild type, it means the fish in question has superior colors and marking to the usual fish from that type.

Hi everyone :)

Here is an update on the challenge discus from Darren.

5 out of the 6 still remain, 1 died mysteriously a while back. Good one day, dead the next and i couldn't see why. none of the usual signs of disease or anything, and i didn't need to treat any other discus, everyone else was looking good....

The 1st photo shows 4 of them at the front, along with some other tank buddies. They are in a 120 gallon.
2nd photo is the largest discus, he was slightly larger than 13cm standard length when i measured him a couple of weeks ago. I guess that is about 5" or slightly more. The rest of the challenge discus are slightly smaller by a centimeter or thereabouts.

lol Thanks April...i think!! :D

Yep, i've noticed that too, females show more red. I remember my old alenquer crosses, the females were brick red and the males like royal blues....wish i still had them...sigh!

Yeah, but feeding and WCs are the work you put into it. Grade A discus with poor care and nutrition won't produce quality Discus. You definitely are responsible for the beauty in your fish. :)

...and here they are again....just arrived at the second last stop on their whirlwind Aussie tour.....

I have to say, you have got to see these guys in the fins to appreciate how awesome they are..the photos can't capture their 3D chunkiness...or the amazing colour variations...I have to post in the disease section re one of them unfortunately....(headstanding)

I am very grateful to Darren & Rod for all the hard work they put into these puppies, and the generosity to the forum they have both shown...3 cheers x 2 for Darren & Rod....:balloon::balloon: Hopefully, they will fry, and we can send a few parcels north of the border;) to both of you.......

....And, also, Thank You to Al, Ryan and all the Simply Admin for the work they put into arranging these events...

Thanks Again you guys

Here's another shot of it when it was a youngster. It was a good way to tell it apart from all the others, and one of my favorites out of the bunch then. Even now in my community tank remains my favorite :D
