I have noticed that my 8 challenge discus were getting a little crowded in their 120 litre (30gal) tank. The largest has reached about 4" now with a few more not to far behind.
Going to a larger tank was not an option for me unfortunaltly without turning the family bathroom into a mini fish room......So l decided to take four of them out today.
I thought long and hard about who should be evicted, and decided to keep the largest and the smallest of them in their challenge tank, with a couple of medium sized fish as well. I don't think that this will upset the 'social structre' in that tank. The largest is still the largest and the 'runt' so to speak is still the runt.
Also the remaining 4 fish moved to my 300 litre (75gal) community discus tank will slot in with the 'social structure' there to, I hope. They are not the largest, nor the smallest. I'm sure that they will feel very out of place in there for awhile among green plants, timber and gravel. I will up my water changes there for a short period.
Going by rule of thumb 1 fish per 10gal, will give the remaining fish their best chance to grow to their full potential.
I suppose only time will tell now.
Your thoughts on my decision to do this would be most welcomed.:D:D:D

It's the evictees that l am most concerned about. I will do my best to make them fit in.

Tanya, l've been thinking this out over the last coupe of weeks, and l am looking forward to the outcome.:D:D:D

Well, Joe, I would presume that if they don't go off their feed and you keep up with the clean water, they will be ok. My first go with juvies in a planted was a result less than desirable, but that's what part of this challenge is, eh. :) good luck, my friend.

It's been a few days since the move, and it appears that all is good.
In the planted tank, the four challlenge fish are holding their own in their new surroundings, and are feeding well. The other occupents in the planted tank are enjoying the few extra feeds l put in there now, plus the additional water changes. Due to applying C02 in this tank the PH is lower at 6.4. This may be why the challenge fish are showing their stress bars.
Meanwhile, back in the challenge tank the four remaining fish are stretching out their fins, and continuing to grow. They arn't feeding as aggresivley as they were in the larger group....Less competition l suppose.
I've attached some photos of both tanks, even though its alot harder trying to get good photos of just the challenge fish.:)
