Would a 40 gallon Tall tank that is 30x12.5x24 be ok for Discus? This would be a permanent tank and how many can I put in it.
Will be barebottom and plantless.

Yes it would be fine for 4 or possibly 5 discus. The important part of keeping discus is clean water. This is acomplished by various means but primarily water changes. Don T.

Go with 50-55g, you will be much happier.

tall tanks don't work as well as a long tank. you should keep atleast 5 or more in a tank and you should have 10 gallons a fish when they are grown...I'd go for atleast the 55..

So a 36 inch or 48 inch long is better than 30 inch long tank? Mininum of 18 inh to 20 inch tall right?

Discus likes to swim up and down or horizontal most of the time?

I generally like to give Discs that are being displayed in a larger tank more water. As much as 20 gallons per adult fish. I don't completely agree on the "no benefit from a tall tank" though.

A tall tank is wasted if they have no side to side room to move, but I'd also say that a long tank, with shallow depth is equally wasted. The ideal tank should have depth AND length to travel. I'd look into a 65 like the ones Discus Hans uses.

Hi Torch, I currently have a 40 gallons with 8 sub-adult discus in it. I do 50-60% water change everyday and wash the filter everyday. I also over filter the tank. They all seem to be happy and eat like crazy. I believe if you keep the water clean its ok.

Hey Gottabekin, I saw a 40 gallon on youtube.com that is a solid setup also. Does yours swim alot, swim lateral or up and down more?

Torch,

They generally don't swim around a lot. Discus is not the type of fish that swim around the tank all the time. But when you walk in front of the tank they all think there's food and swim crazy in the front begging for food.
