I picked up my discus today from Inland Empire Discus. 2 Red Melons and 2 Blue Diamonds.

The tank has been cycled for 6 weeks. The tank is 84 degrees and 7.4-.6 ph. I use the float and drip method to acclimatize them. But the fish are kinda hovering in the corner. Is this normal?

How big is your tank, could be the tank is just too big for 4 discus. But first thing is, they need some time to get used to their new home. As long as your water parameters are good, and the tank isn't too big, they'll come around. Sometimes it takes just a day or two, and I've seen it take a few weeks for them to come around.

good luck with your new babies.

Once they start to recognize its you that feeds them.
They should come around fine.

This is totally normal, I wouldn't worry about it as long as your water parameters stay stable.

I like that ph/ammonia moniter thing. I'm sure many people here only check their levels when they first start a tank (me included) but that would be an easy addition for extra security with the fish. How reliable do you think it is?

I like it as a quick resource, but sometimes the PH colors are hard to distinguish.

I had 20 tetras(neons and black skirts) in there with them. I think the black skirts may have been a little too active for the discus so I took them out.

After taking out the ALL the tetras and doing a 50% water change they almost instantly seemed better. They are really active and swimming all over.

I think that was a very wise move. I started with Zebra Danois with my first Discus, what a mistake that was! Wish I had found this Forum before I bought my fish, check the Discus tank-mate section here.
Congratulations!

They look better than mine did when they were added to my tank. Mine hid under sponge filters for about three days! I would just suggest keep up on water changes and watch nitrite and ammonia levels. After I added my fish I detected a slight nitrite spike even though I thought my tank had been cycled for weeks for the amount of fish I added. Good luck and enjoy! :)

Hence my screen name. I will be on traveling this week to Vancouver,Canada.

This fish have been doing great, swimming freely and no signs of stress. I turned off the lights and didn't feed them for the first day or two. I also put in a hydrosponge filter in addition to the Ehiem 2026.

In preparation for the 5 days of travel I have to do I did a 50% water change. I also Instructed my wife what the signs of stress look like, what to feed them and how to do a water change. I think they will be fine and all she will have to do is feed them and then I will do a water change when I get home on Saturday.

Wish me luck!!
