In a recent issue of Aqualog New, issue #78, page 14, there is an article introducing a recently newly imported snail from SE Asia that eats other snails. The name of this snail is Anentome helena.
It has a very attractively marked shell and in size and shape it resembles the well known Malayan Trumpet Snail(MTS). This snail has a wide range but is not common within it's range. This makes sense if it is a specialized carnivore as it appears to be. Unlike the MTS, it is an egg layer instead of a live bearer and it does not lay many eggs.
As this is a very recent discovery and new import, it will undoubtedly take some time to become established in the hobby but such a snail is a promising development for our hobby especially for the planted tank.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a snail that does not have population explosions yet devours any other snails it catches?
