Just thought I would comment on a recent visit to Discus Madness in NJ. Purchased four discus, two about three and a half and two about two and a half inches. They started eating within an hour after being acclimated, never had discus do that before.
I have tried several sites, won't mention them but they never were healthy nor survived no matter how well I treated them. I found being able to go there a great advantage but none the less I think he has excellent fish. I will try to post a picture or two later if I can. I am sure there are good dealers but again I have to say this guy had the only discus that seemed to acclimate well and seem extremely healthy.

I previously bought discus from Mathias @Discus Madness & can agree that he has nice fish & once when I had a health issue he was helpful.I chose him as a vendor because he was within driving distance(90 min.'s) & I wanted to hand pick my discus.
I have since had discus shipped from Cal. from a sponsor on this forum(Kenny's Discus)& and they are exceptional quality discus.:D
They were in transit for 20+ hr.'s and upon release into my tank they were looking for food & already acclimated!
Kenny's customer support has left me speechless-all around standup guy:D
IMO-sponsors here are the only way to purchase discus.
Best of luck with your discus,
Rob

Got two red turqs and two checkerboards. Just happy to have some active healthy discus for a change,, was about to give up on keeping them.

Did you pickup the fish or have them shipped?
Any peppering on the checkerboards?
What is your tank setup like?
Any plans on adding more discus?-I guess that's a silly question, seems we always got plans on adding fish:D

Hi,

I also have bought quite a few discus from Discus Madness. Well, I got 2 nice fairly large discus which have proved to be very healthy but they were sold to me as "red diamonds". Now they are plain red melons. Don't know what happened!!! Beautiful discus though. And very healthy. Both have paired up.
The other two have had health issues...So I am more reserved about them, but I must say that their stock pictured is awesome looking. I think it's way better to go with the SD breeders like Kenny, for instance!!!!! JMHO, for what it's worth!

I agree with most of what has been posted about DM. I ordered their five discus special and was VERY dissappointed with the heavily peppered and really ugly discus he sent (bad shape, terrible colors). I blame myself ultimately because I should have asked Mathias what kind he would send -- I assumed it would [at least] be from the stock pictured on his web site. Not one of the strains he sent was listed on his web site and I consider this a bit of bait and switch.

All five died except for one. The remaining one has never really thrived and is stunted?

In contrast, I ordered 6 discus from Cary w/ Great Lakes Discus and all (except for the one that jumped out of my tank :-( ) have thrived and are just beautiful.

Just wondering how he is about shipping of equipment. I was looking at his heaters and was going to order until he sent me his forms for credit cards, of which he asks for photo copies of the front & back that contains the security code. I felt this is too much info to be faxing out so I backed away from the deal. Anyone have any experience with him for shipping products?

I've ordered products as well with no problems at all.

I personally picked the fish up but he did an excellent job packing them up for the trip home. The checkerboards had a little peppering but looked great otherwise. What is kennys website listed under? couldn't find it on line

Rob, Sophie, Hector, thanks for your kind referrals my friends. Hope you all been doing well!:)

Hans, thank you my friend you have some beautiful fish yourself!:)

clogwood, if you are interested in some fish let me know what you're looking for; if I don't have what you need I'll be more than happy to give you referrals on them. All sponsors on this site carry both beautiful imports and homegrown discus.

Thanks friends,
Kenny

Discus Madness mail order fish suck, this crook sent me expensive fish that didn't entirely match what I ordered, and one had a deformed pectoral fin no less!!! His response was, I will make up for it on your next order. Well why would I order from him again if the first order sucked?? And the fact is I have no room for more fish anyway so there will be no next order, I'll work it out with my credit card company, its fraud. Buyer beware, buy at your own risk!!!!!

Hi Rob,

Well, my 2 red diamonds originally had a white face and a really red body...The face slowly lost its white color and the body became more and more orangey. Now they are both totally orangey !!!! They are both good looking fish that really grew (they are about 6 and a half ") but they are both peperring and super aggressive!!! (any link there???:p:p:p)
They were red melon disguised as red diamonds!!!! Hormones, hormones....I was told not to feed them any anasthaxin (spelling???) which is impossible as it's in most foods... When I e-mailed Matthias, I got no reply....Should have called!!!!
Do you have the same problem I do?

I think when faces turn from white to redder color with age then what you have are males..the females supposedly stay white faced..i could be wrong anyone care to correct me be my guest..

One of my so called "red diamonds" is a male....The other one is a female. Both have paired up and spawned. This is how I know who is what!!!!

Sounds like you got it down pat Sophie! Honestly, I get food from Mathias, but buying discus over the net from him is a bad idea. Its risky at best and bound to disappoint. Stick with sponsers from this site, you'll always have a recourse if there is a problem.

I'm extremely lucky I picked out the fish myself!
Hope everything works out for you!

Hi MSD,

Yes, I agree, Tony @ Sunrise Tropicals is also a reliable seller. But my favorite is still....Kenny!!!!! I know, I have shopped everywhere!!!! He's the only one that I trust will send me a GREAT fish even if he has not seen me...I think you can get good fish from breeders IF you GO there IN PERSON...., NOT ONLINE!!!!!!

Yes I now have a orange fish/yellow face here.I've had mine 6mo.'s & highly doubt he'll get to 6+".On the bright side- the Red Melon(sold as Super Red Diamond) has no sign of peppering.I got some peppering on a Checkerboard PB-Seems to be less these days & his growth rate is good!Guess you gotta take the good with the bad:(-unless your dealing with Kenny, then it's all good:D)

Yes Sophie, I agree you have to pick out your fish in person to avoid being taken advantage of, except for the sponsors on this forum like Kenny, who have amazing fish and don't rip off the consumer. And thanks for the kind words subcooler, I'll chalk it up to experience and hope I can help others avoid making the same mistake I did.

Hi all,

I know its hard not to have discussions in threads like this, but its important that we keep the banter down......just share your experiences here with Discus Madness....good or bad as some have done here..

Instead of recommending others in this thread...I would suggest that you just take out a new thread for that seller.....or if its a sponsor...do so in their sponsor section.

The idea is to just have a review of a vendor in this section based on personal experiences.

Thanks,
al

I modified my post too, but we had bad experiences none the less and need to protect unsuspecting buyers from making the same mistakes we did! His food and dry goods are fine, its the fish selection from online sight unseen which is risky.

Well, I just visited Discus Madness in Nj and was impressed. All the discus looked great there. I thought the pricing was fair also.

I'm sorry to hear some of you had issues, my experience with Discus Madness was very pleasant.
Mathias provides exceptional customer service, and resolves any questions or concerns you may have. I inquired about color and size many times, and received a prompted accurate response.
I have ordered from discusmadness.com 3 times via Internet, a total of 9 Discus. All have arrived alive and stay alive, very healthy and happy. The color and shape of each specimen is outstanding and vibrant. Shipment is very flexible, and all items are affordable.

I will post pictures soon:D

I didn't see them as a sponsor and i'm not sure i'm in the right thread.
Has anyone have any experience with Discus Madness in NJ?

They are reasonably close to me and their website has some nice fish.
Just wondering if anyone can give a good recommendation.

Thnx, Anyone els have any good/bad.

I have personally dealt with Mathias on a few occasions and he was awesome
to deal with in person. His fish room was spotless and has offered his help with not only fish questions but with anything that had to do with equipment,
filters. My personal experience, he is worth making an appointment with.

Just got five (last Wednesday) of the most beautiful blue cobalts from Discus Madness. They were listed as 2.5 inches but three are actually bigger. He was great to deal with and I love my fish.

i bought my first set of discus from mathias and they turned out well. some of his fancier strains are a bit pricey IMO. also, bob tools is in NJ. you might want to check out his stock as well.

I live in south Jersey, 10 miles from the Delaware Bay, a 2.5 hour trip to Discus Madness. I got my six from Discus Madness and would go back if I were to buy more. the fish room is great. Dress lightly, it is hot. The visit is by appointment, so, while you are not rushed, you have his full attention. The selection was good and the fish adapted quickly and beautifully to their new home. Unlike some places I have been, he raises them with lights on the tanks, so lights on your tank when you get them home (after the first day) do not freak them out. Seems like a little thing, but its not!

I would absolutely go see Discus Madness's fish before you buy anywhere.

I just bought 4 discus from discus madness (in person) and so far I couldn't be happier. I asked mathias about those internet specials (5 for I think 125 or 8 for 200) and he said those ship from somewhere else and not from him, I believe he said their hatchery. Just figured id pass that on. I'm surprised to see the mixed reviews, I would highly recommend discus madness to anybody, although I have never dealt with their online orders.
