Where are you located? We are just starting a discus tank, now that are reef tank is "done" - this is my pet project. I have not been thrilled with what I have seen in LFS.

Just looking for local breeders to utilize as opposed to mail order/internet stores. I much prefer to see my fish and how they are functioning.

Thanks!

Thought I registered for this thread, but guess not.
My name is Ardan, just a hobbyist. Racine in S.E. Wisconsin, between Milwaukee and Chicago.
About 20 tanks, most of them empty at the moment. Enjoy cichlids and some plecos. Favorites are Oscars and Discus, but have had many other tropical fish over the yrs. (40 yrs?)

Hello Wisconsin folks. I'll be moving here soon. Just wanted to say what's up. We had a good turn out at our last meeting held in Janesville but would like to see a better group as we become more organized. This will happen as more people join in the happening. We have people from Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. The potential is here to have a great group that sets the foundation to discus keeping and to teach that foundation and love for discus keeping to others in our area. You may contact me via pm if you're interested. Whether you're an experienced keeper or a novice you're welcome to join.

Welcome NWIdiscus, guess it's way past time I log in here too. Where abouts you from in Northern WI?

To post a new thread just go into the appropriate section and look for the large blue oval that says +Post New Thread toward the middle left of the screen.

Thanks for the info. I figured it out now. I live a mile upstream of the confluence of the Chippewa and Flambeau Rivers on the Chippewa.

Keith

Honestly why do people find that keeping discus is so tough? I have been out of it for like twenty five years. It was a bit tougher then. No one had really done it then and they where dealing with wild fish. Now these fish are god could only guess how many generations deep and aquarium raised. Can they not follow instructions? Granted I am not trying to breed the next super line of fish, but they seem as tough as a angel fish. Both cichlids right? But if you do your research and get your tank dialed in I have found them a very easy fish to keep. After reading a ton of post I see a pattern. People get into trouble when they try to change things. Bigger tank new lights c02 who knows what. But for a person who wants a beautiful tank it seems easy. Just follow instructions. Keep it stable. I lost a discus this year, prettiest one I had, I left the cover open. Man I cried. Maybe sometime in the future I will have to deal with all the illness issues. But I figure if I do it is because I was pushing my eco system, tank, so now I have to do something crazy to recover. Once I start to do that I figure I will just be chasing my tail and harming the fish as well.

I'm in Milwaukee! Recently lost my adult stendker discus to a solenoid failure.

Was wondering if there are any quality discus local. Reaching out to other locals? I know best fish sells them, but want to buy at least 10 and looking for 2 inch range to save some money and raise them myself.

Let me know if you know of anywhere close by or even in chicago area!

Bill63SG in Naperville and 13discus in Sheboygan would be my suggestions. I've got both of their phone numbers if you want them, or post a total of 11 times and you can PM them directly.

Greetings Smoky. Some real good folks keeping discus in the Southern part of the state, and believe it or not a few south of the border too. Make sure you check out the NADA 2016 banner at the top of the screen when you see it, or easier yet here's a link. http://discusnada.org/2016NADAdiscusshow/ One heck of a discus show coming to Chicagoland next summer.

Thanks Keith. I went to the Aquatic Experience and was blown away. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make the NADA show, but I talked to their reps and got info on it. I'm currently looking for new discus to buy (only have 2). Taking it slow so that I don't spend a ton and then kill them all.
