I have never used a sponge filter and I have a 10 gallon tank I want to set up as a fry tank. Can I attach a sponge filter to the side of my planted 55 gal tank to seed it and then use it in the 10 gal when needed and then place it back in the 55 gal to keep the bacteria alive when the 10 gal is not in use?
Will there be any negative effects to the 55 by adding and removing the extra sponge filter? This seems like an easier way than trying to keep an empty tank 'alive'.
any advise is appreciated. thank you.

That will work fine but keepin mind that the sponge will only have so much ability and won't tank a huge bio-load...mind you, you can't put much in a 10
