The 2217 looks pretty promising. I never took the canister plunge but I am thinking about it myself to save space. I am interested in what others might suggest. I also like the look of Marineland C-360.

I own both eheim 2215 and an fluval 305, I like them both alot and have had no problems at all. I think the fluval is maybe a bit more user friendly than the eheim. But i'd really have to say i like the eheim more. I dont like having to prime my fluval its a pain.

I have both the Eheim 2217 and the Fluval 405. I have the Eheims because they are a great filter. I have the Fluval because I was told I should never throw anything connected with the hobby away. I got really tired of messing with it and replacing parts when they broke so its collecting dust in the basement. :)

I have heard that most Eheim models are no longer produced in Germany. So the fit and finish is no longer as it is reputed. Is this true?

I ask because I don't have direct experience with the new units. My Eheim has lasted for about 20 years and is still going strong :-)

I've heard too that certain eheim models are no longer made in Germany. I can't remember for sure which models were made elsewhere, although I'm pretty sure I was told the Classics & Professional line was Germany still. I can't say that I verified that. It's just what ppl on a forum said - so who knows if it is correct or not. Maybe it was the Eco line ????? Anyone know????

Over 40+ years I have had and tried most brands of filter. ime there is only one and that is Eheim, and a particular favourite of mine is the classic range with the 2217 being my favoured filter for most tanks. Simple, efficient, quiet, ultra reliable and bullet proof.

I currently have two Eheim's running on my tank and LOVE them! I have the Eheim Ecco 2236 and the Professional II 2028. The Ecco is easier to clean and no priming involved... but the Pro II is a serious canister. I've had them for 3 yrs and no problems whatsoever with them or the quality. I wouldn't hesitate to get these again.. HTH... :D

I have 2 Eheim Pro II and a few fluval. Let's just say I have a lot of fluval parts but no Eheim.

I haven't tried other cannisters at all, because the forum that I stumbled upon first (as well as the next one I found) all had many members who recommended eheim. I have 3 eheim pro II 2028 & 2 pro II 2026, plus 1 pro 2224 (bought the 2224 2nd hand on ebay). I'm very happy with them, but really have nothing to compare them with.

I have a Fluval 405. I love it. I like the availiability of fluval parts for customizing them. They are also less expensive. Its the only canister filter that I have owned, but as far as cleaning, I dont see how it could be any easier. Priming is no problem for me. I love the sound that it makes too when its running, very quiet and stealthy. I would buy another one for another tank in the future.

We have an Eheim 2217 running on our discus tank, as well as an Eheim 2236 on our Angel tank, and an Eheim 2215 on loan to a friend. I have had Fluvals in the past. I recommend the Eheim 2217 with no reservations. Ours runs quietly. We have had no issues customizing it with prefilters and an adjustable multidirectional return spray bar. My husband and I like ours so much, we just pounced on a deal for 2 more this last weekend.

Hope this helps.
