Hi all,

Looking for feedback on what types of media everyone uses (or should use) in their filters.

My basics first...

I have a 55 Gallon Planted tank that I am setting up for Discus.

Currently I have a Rena XP3 and a old HOB (cant even tell u the name of) that has two slots for filters etc....

In the XP3 I have

Bottom - 3 filters pads
Middle - Bio Chips
Top - Some Peat Chips and some Phosphate remover

In the HOB I have

Two Bags with Carbon.

Now I am trying to lower my PH a bit (I have a new (5 month old cycled tank with some tetra, SAE and Pleco) so I took out the Carbon.

Is this typcial........do I need the carbon?

for a grow out tank of discus get rid of everything but the foam filters. and replace everything with a foam filter. carbon is a waste of money your water isn't going to be in there long enough for carbon. you should keep a prefilter on power filters and HOB. clean your prefilter at WC's and the rest of the filter about once a month..

ditch the carbon .....no use for it in the discus world

Thanks all,

I ditched the carbon in my HOB and added some more Peat.
