What do you think about putting discus in a 40 gallon breeder tank? It will be a planted tank with Flora-Base substrate under sand. It will have some crypts, sword plants, micro swords, and anubias nana & petite. It will be a low tech planted tank with an AC 50 or two and a single strip fluorescent bulb. What do you think? How many adults or sub-adults would I be able to keep in it? TIA!

If you keep up with the water changes and with some good filtration you could put 6...Remember a 40 breeder is really 48 gallons of water. I have 18 of these tanks, I love them.

Interesting! I wouldn't, primarily because it is planted. Just curious, what are the dimensions on that tank?

Define good filtration please :D! I'm thinking an AC 70 or two AC 50s? I don't like air pumps because they tend to get noisy so that takes sponge filters out of the equation for me. Maybe a sponge filter with a powerhead? And really? Six discus? Hmmmm.... now you really got me thinking.... :p Thanks, Dan!

not trying to step on toes here and i know that Elite Aquaria has a lot of knowledge on discus but i think 6 might be too many for that 40 breeder, that's stricly my opinion only. take it with a grain of salt

Well, probably 6 in a BB tank...

rickztahone,

I agree with the standard approach, 1 fish per 10 gallon rule. However, the most important factor when determining how many fish you can put in a tank is the water quality not the tank size...

If you have a great filtration system or do large water changes you can put 2x's the amount of fish and you will not have any problems. I have stocked up to 10 adult fish in a 40 breeder without any issues...Again I have a central filtration system, I do daily water changes and I also have BB tanks...;)

We all have our experiences so don't worry my toes are still in good shape buddy...:)
