Hey all,
I am considering adding some stones to my tank. Are there any stones or stone-characteristics that I should take care to avoid?

Test with the vinegar or ph minus if it foams, then its not good. Avoid also stones with too shiny particles.

Lots of the stones I have, I picked up in your area (Lake Huron) - some of them do breakdown in the acidic water though, especially the Petoskey stones, so I'd advise to skip those. I just boil the stones and put them in. If you're not sure about the stones, pick up some petrified wood. Those are safe to use.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
Is river rock safe? It's usually sold in main chain pet stores like PetSmart or Petco in the aquarium section.
I used it before but not in a discus tank.

River rock properly cleaned and disinfected should be fine. I got my rocks from the banks of my local river. There is some rocks to look out for. I did a google search and came up with some rock solid answers
