after reading about not using carbon cartridges in hob filters. I was wondering then what do you put in there?

thanks

You could use filter floss or a biological media such as ceramic rings or balls.

Pretty much what Scribbles said but whatever you do use, I recommend you using a pre-filter on the intake tube.

filter floss worked best for me. i use to cut the cartridge from top side, put the filter floss in there and then sew it back up. i used a prefilter btw and i replaced the filter floss every 2 weeks

i use a sponge on the intake tube and suspect it does a better job of biological filtration than the HOB does ...

The advantage of using two pads in the HOB is that you can clean out the alternate one every week and not be too worried about wiping out the bacteria colony.

I just put sponge, bio rings & filter floss for those HOB filters....great to have a pre filter for the intake tube as Master Eddie mentioned earlier....the Filter Max fits most of the Aquaclear filters.

Penguin 350 has media cartridges and you can buy media baskets for each slot. The inlet tubes are square so you will have to DIY a prefilter from an ordinary sponge.

The Marineland Emperor 280/400 models could use media container like these.

Refillable Media Container holds an additional four ounces of activated carbon or other chemical filtration media.

That is right, carbon is not needed, it is not that it is not allowed. Carbon has it's purposes but other forms of media are more effective.

No, just get plain ol media. Some good types are the pourus rings or eheim substrate Pro, things of that nature.

eheim substrate Pro is really good for this container. The rings are too big but the small substrate pro fits perfectly.
