On my 110 i change 40 gallons daily with gravel vac. Im a little extreme but i'd do more that 25% a week.

Depends on your stocking levels and feeding regiment. I'd so 50% every other day but again, depends on how much you feed and how many fish you got.

Lots of different opinions on WC so I'll tell you what I do just for your information; I do 50% twice a week for what I consider a standard bioload. ( 1 discus per 10g of water, feeding 3 times a day.)
I keep my nitrates around 5 or less. This is in tanks with gravel or sand bottom.
My answer is over simplified; The age of the fish, number of feedings also effects the need for wc. There are many who change 50% or more each day but there are also those who change 50% or less once a month. Don T.

Definitely beating a dead horse when it comes to water changes. I guess I have done too much reading on the proper requirements of discus water. LOL

In all actuality, I change 130% water everyday and that still isn't enough. In Andrew Soh's book, it is recommended that the water in a discus aquarium is replaced 2 times over every day, not filtered, replaced. That's the word of a professional.

Age definitely makes a difference

Does he reccomend not using a filter, meaning that nitrifying bacteria are not needed?

The filtration methods explained in his book are extremely good. He goes into the different systems in depth and still, water replacement is essential. ;)
