I had 3 Discus in my 29 years ago. I wouldn't do more than that it was really pushing it for space.

I used to only be able to get 29s when I was living in the Azores Portugal and I used to keep 5-6 discus in the them but none of the fish grew larger than 3-3.5 inches total length and that was the biggest fish in the tank.

Better use the 29 gallons tank as a hospital tank or use it for frys after leaving the parents.....just my 2 cents.

29 gal tanks are good for breeding pairs

10 gallons to 1 full grown discus. a 29 gallon, 3 at max. like others said, in my opinion I would use the 29 as a hospital/breeding pair tank.

while this is the rule of thumb it has been the experience of many members who have kept 3 discus that the aggression is not evenly distributed and there will fighting.

Ricardo is right. I have 2 in a 35 that are fairing well. Really it boils down to the individual discus. If 2 or 3 are not overly aggressive and you can tell they would do well, you take a chance. Buying 3 new ones without any idea of each fishes personality would not be advised.

I would agree with most of being said & go no more then 3(although, if 2 pair up you could have serious probs). If you can go all same sex it would help. Personality plays an important role too.

Personally I would use it as a short term grow out, hospital, quarantine or pair tank.

Funny you should say that, I heard years ago that a fish would never grow bigger than it's environment would allow.....don't know if it's an old fish tale, pun intended, but your experience seems to support it...:)

I remember fishing on lakes in Texas when I was a kid and every now and then we'd come up on dead floating goldfish the size of a female large mouth bass. :D
