Lily getting big

I bought a small red lily plant, and now it's getting really big. It has 5 lily pads already.

Do I need to trim these back? Can I split the plant and put part of it in another tank?

If you want large submerged leaves you must cut those reaching the surface early. Lilies do grow very attractive and large submersed leaves with proper pruning.
