I was originally going to do a eco complete substrate with a black background. Well I bought the eco complete and made the background black and started cycling the tank (55g). Well after reading, and reading, AND reading, I found that this may not be the best way to display a discus to its fullest. So my tropical 55g will now be moved into the eco complete tank.

On to the discus. I see that A LOT of you all use sand in the tank as substrate. And its starting to grow on me. But are you guys putting anything underneath it for ferts? Like a layer of eco complete or flourite and then sand on top? Ideally I would like to do this instead of fert sticks or something along those lines. But my concern is I dont want the fert mixing with sand and giving me a weird looking substrate. Any advise? I have some time since I still have to finish cycling the first tank and then move my tropical into it. And THEN redo the other tank. Thanks!
