Well I figured it would be any day but not any minute! I saw her tube down earlier today and got some good shots. I uploaded the photos and returned to her laying eggs. The reason I am ecstatic is because the Heckel X (possibly one of Waynes Checkerboard Heckels) has always eaten the eggs as they were laid by the females. Not this time! He is making his runs.

Hey Chandan, I am not experienced at all. Still learning every day. I've only kept discus off and on for a long time. I have never been able to sit back for several years to put forth the effort. Now that I am in Japan, I have a few more years here and I am also going to try and stay here another 4 years on top of that. This would give me >6 years to work on some breeding skills. :D

Take care guys!

Only one white egg today.......wonder what that means:o

Chris

Thanks Chris, I am not really sure. These 2 different types have never been crossed. Might just be a mut fish. We'll see though. I am thinking something along the lines as turqs but its really hard to say, could be anything really. The Heckel cross is dominant I think but who knows. :o

Finally :D Had to remove the female, she was trying to lay again and I said "F" it. Lets see what the male can do, so far so good. There isn't too many, maybe 30 or 40 left to hatch and about a dozen wrigglers.

That is about as sincere as I can make my statement.

I thought Chandan made a good observation.

Good Papa so far, he's mouthed the little suckers and put them back in their piles, cool as hell. He is pretty defensive too. If I get too close he'll rush me, so protective.

Darn the bad luck all, unfortunately the male ate the fry. Really weird because we were only asleep for 2-3 hours. When I went downstairs, all the babies were gone and all the old/hatched eggs were cleaned off the cone. I tossed the female back in the tank before we left out. Maybe they'll try again, who knows. At least it was cool seeing the little wrigglers! I hope they do end up being a good pair.

So the last time the 2 spawned, I coned the eggs, removed Mom and they turned to wrigglers. Slowly Dad was able to somehow eat them so I took out the egg guard, put Ma back in and left for Texas, literally. LOL Now the wife mentioned that they had a new batch of eggs the day before yesterday and today she told me that she noticed all the eggs gone. She figured they ate the eggs but apparently all the eggs hatched and Ma and Pa moved the wrigglers to the backside of the cone. Hopefully they feel like raising them this time. There is just something about not changing water and not feeding the fish that gets mine going, strange. Hopefully will have some photos of them when I return. Keep your fingers crossed, mine are!

Take care,

Eddie

Thanks! The funny thing is, there are NO lights on any of my tanks, just when the sun comes up or goes down. Which means its damn near pitch black at night and very dim in the days. Strange....guess they enjoy dim lit rooms. :D Wonder how they are able to see the fry to move them around the cone at night....

Funny you should mention that Jason, they went free swimming last night when I got home. The parents are meticulously keeping them bunched up on the cone. I had to drop the water level, since they are in a 45, too much space for the fry to get away. I love going out of town!

I know, they are spawning non-stop. LOL

Heckel Cross X Blue Scorpion
The first batch to attach to Ma ended up getting eaten by Mom on day 7. There was 1 tiny fry left from that batch. I fished him out and fed him BBS for a few days until he started eating crushed pellet.

Albino Red Diamond
The very first batch that attached to Ma and Pa, had only 8 survivors. I had them in a 10 gallon for a while and 6 died from something, just zipping around the tank and swirling in tight circles, laying on the tank bottom. Changed a few things and was able to save 2 of the smallest ones.

Capiche :D

Round 5, hopefully they won't eat them. Both Ma and Pa fanning their small clutch of eggs. Ma is fairly small so she only pumps out +/- 100 eggs every spawn.

He wasnt eating or drinking anything without vomiting but this afternoon he finally started holding down food and water. Hopefully its past the worst part, been worried sick. :(

Thanks for asking and hope all is well, take care

Hay, sorry about your son! Take good care of him. I just have to say...the combination of your dedication to daily maintenance, your photo skills, and your ability to let your fish spawn, and most of all your willingness to share in your experience by posting all this stuff here...really go a long way to helping us (at least me) understand the intricacies of discus keeping and spawning. I so appreciate your effort, Eddie! mike:):):)

Thanks Mike, really good to hear. Its funny, I had been thinking about the different methods to get my boy to take pedialyte, cause he wont drink it. I finally worked out a method to get him to take small sips. :D Where there is a will.....there is a way.

Went home for dinner and my boys fever has subsided but still trying to shake that stomach virus. :( At least he is taking fluids, so I am just hoping its over soon.

Take care my friend and wish you the best with your beauty's!

Can you explain your feeding regimine? I tried my first batch from the carnation turk/blue knight cross pair with no bbs and used crushed Prime Reef like you. I began to have problems that I suspected were gill flukes. I lost a few fry everyday and tried several teatments. No luck. Finally , I realized that my thermometer was registering 85 degrees but water was acutally only 79-80. I guess even the old fashioned glass aquarium thermometers can be unreliable sometimes. Anyway, after fixing the heat problem there were no more deaths but many of the fry were way behind on growth and many have only one pectoral fin. I believe this is due to stress fro cold and medications rather that a birth defect as the secong batch of fry are growing fast and devoloping nicely.(look like yours) I started the second hatch from this pair on bbs and after 3 days switched to fbs and crushed flake foods. They were born on 11-21.

Well Scott, I'll tell you what I did regardless of getting my head shot off by the experts. :o

Day 7 - Pulled from Dad and moved them to their own tank
Days 8-14 - I was really worried about overfeeding so I mistakenly underfed them, maybe 3-4 times a day with Frozen BBS and once a day with Angel Plus fry food. I'd do daily 95% water changes with full tank wipe downs right before. Rinsing the sponge filter every day. I kept the tank temp at 88F the entire time. I had 1 drop of Formalin 3 and 2 drops of Malachite Green for every gallon. I'd add this back with every water change. I actually started doing 2 times a day 95% WCs.
Days 15-18 - Started feeding pork heart, nothing else. The pork heart is not supplemented with anything, just pure heart and it is SUPER processed using a hand mixer. I am keeping 2 drops of Malachite green per gallon but not using Formalin any longer. Still doing twice daily 95% water changes. Tank temp is at 88F constantly.

This has been working for me so far so....now that I said it, there is a big target on my forehead for the experts. :D Shoot away! LOL

I probably lost 5-6 through the whole process but only the super tiny ones, not one large fry. They are approaching the end of the 3rd week and then we'll see what the 4th week has in store. :o

Take care,

Eddie

I wouldnt even be able to begin to say that its optimal. Most of this was taken from Success with Discus by Jim Quarles, he recommends 89F. Its tricky because the water can turn bad fast so thats why I increased to 2 water changes daily.

Getting the fish on animal heart early was taken from Andrew Soh's first book.

So far so good...:D

Great thread Eddie. Glad to see you raising wigglers.

Yea - I know what this guy means about the pig heart. I mean I'm all for breeding - in fact I have my pair in a breeder right now - but I'm not going to go through all the food preparation stuff. I'll give it a try with normal stuff and see how fry grow out. A little depressing for me since I'm soo not into this special feeding stuff. Maybe I'll send my wigglers to the Amazon and have somene catch my fry when they are grown. LOL

Thanks Tito....really appreciate it. Honestly man, you wouldn't even find it difficult to blend out some heart. Get it from the butcher cubed or cleaned, throw it in a hand mixer, exactly like this one.

http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-Blender-Chopper-Attachments-HB-154PC/dp/B000GHF3V8/ref=sr_1_20/182-4764658-2166010?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1259805167&sr=1-20

Blend it up very smooth and throw it in a plastic bag, then to the freezer. Then just break of little bits and feed to the fry.....easy as pie!

Is there a reason why you are using formalin and malachite green though? I really would not recommend using those chemicals unless you are dealing with an issue...Did I miss something? Im not commenting on this because theres a mark on your head:) but because I think its un-necessary and would hate to see others think it was necessary or somehow beneficial ...Those are caustic and dangerous chemicals... you may be setting yourself up for problems down the road.

Healthy fry should only need clean water My friend. Be careful using chemicals unnecessarily.:)

best of luck,

Definitely Al, I wanted to basically follow a set of rules that have been successful in raising fry. The Formalin and Malachite Green is taken directly from Success with Discus by Jim Quarles. ;)

It worked out in this case but I'd surely be up for a batch without it. :o

Sorry Al, I definitely didnt want to give any bad advice, its just in the book. :o Its page 39 paragraph 3, taken word for word from the book.

At this point I add two drops of malachite green to the gallon of water. I replace it when I make water changes. This helps keep parasites, such as ich and other pests, from attacking the fry. I retain this in the water until the fry are about 1 1/2 inches in size and are moved to larger quarters.

When I lost my last group of Albinos, I was stumped. I know we talked about overfeeding but that wasn't it. I was being super diligent and still, the fish would zip and die. Now, I haven't had a single death in this manner. Could be just a fluke......or, them not having any. :o

22 days old, so start of the 4th week. I really dont foresee any problems arising. They've been killing pork heart all day, every day for the last week. I'll be moving them to a 50 gallon next weekend.

Looks like a got quite a few snakeskin and some 9 bar. The largest fish of the brood are the snakes.

24 days, halfway through week 4, no hick-ups....let me knock on wood. They went into the 50 gallon today. The litte ones are growing at a better rate now that they've all been eating pork heart as their staple diet.

28 days old, end of week 4. Got them eating pure porkheart and also started giving them my more complete homemade mix, just finely processed. They seem to enjoy it. :D

Eddie I rarely open videos hosted on photobucket because for some reasons it feezes up my computer after it plays:mad::mad:, but even judging by the still pic from the video they look like they are doing great.

Can anyone else see the faint heckel bar or is it just me?! lol

LOL, yeah man, I know what you mean. I used to have the same problem. I usually open the video in another window and it doesnt lock up.

Here is a still shot, 14 bar on top and 9 bar on the bottom. ;)
