To be proactive, I'm looking to buy a microscope. Any recommendations on brands, where to buy, and what to look for?

Thanks,

David,
I like amscopes. I bought this one about 3 years ago and am very happy so far. I think you get a lot for your money here. Just my thoughts.

Thanks Kenny! It does look like it would be great and I see there is an add on for the digital camera. ThatPetPlace has only one microscope with the digital camera included for less, but it doesn't have the range of magnification.

Thanks for your recommendation!

David,
look on craigslist, at times you can find some good deals on them. I bought one off craigslist but decided to upgrade to a cam model. Pm me your address and i will send you a good book on selecting microscopes and their uses. It may help you in understanding and selecting one. I am no expert, but i think the limited magnification and mono eye piece combo cam maybe too limiting in the one you listed. IMO you do not need to go to 1600x as that gets complicated with the oil immersion lens and unnecessary in what you will be trying to identify. Again I am no expert so i will send you a book to help you.

Kenny,

That's very generous of you Kenny! I'm actually good with your recommendation, but I sent you a PM if you think the book will help as well.

Take care,
David

HI David- I also have the Amscope and I love it. I got it on ebay from a vendor named precision world. Here is the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/40X-1600X-DOCTOR-VET-LAB-TRINOCULAR-COMPOUND-MICROSCOPE_W0QQitemZ170267795352QQcmdZViewItemQQpt ZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item27a4c05f98&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

The thing I would have to say is that I feel like getting the trinocular instead of the binocular was not necessary. I did that so I could take digital pics as well but turns out that if you put the lens of your digital camera to one of the eye pieces of your microscope it works great. I have a canon powershot and the trick is to zoom in a little first.

Here are some pics I have taken that way:

So if I had to do it all over again I would get the B series, also because with the T series you still have to buy the actual camera.

Good luck with your research, and hope this tid bit of information helped.

Julie :)

Hi Julie,

Very helpful as well, thank you! I placed my eBay "buy now" order today and I'm sure I'll be happy with my selection.

Thanks for the tips!

Whatever you do, don't buy any cheap microscopes made of plastic. Plastic microscopes won't last long.
