Thanks Hendri, that was literally just as I dropped them into the tank. Now they are woofing down Australian Black Worms like it was their last meal!!! ;)

Not sure how they will turn out but I am VERY excited to find out. Hopefully they will carry alot of the male (lago solomon) traits! Love his deep red and orange brown base. ;)

Well I was gonna wait another week but these guys are doing AMAZING. I was talking with Bill and these bad boys actually prefer tinted water. I have been using a little peat in the filter and I am going to be using a bit more to get the water a little darker for them. They LOVE the bit of tint.

Eddie,

Gorgeous fish! Drooling over here! As for the name, could it be that the fish is from "Lago Solimoes"? Not that it matters, but Solimoes is a river and a lake and would explain the confusion with the translation of the name.

Just speculating here, in any case...they are incredible!

Thanks Rod, not too sure really. It could just be a translation error but Lago Solomon wilds are showing up quite a bit on the Japanese Market. There are some HUGE blues coming through, labeled from Lago Solomon.

Very nice fish Eddie. I don't understand the reference to how the fish "crashed" so you treated 'em with PP...

A little enlightenment?

Crash is my term for falling ill overnight. An illness that is fast and furious. Basically a number of symptoms such as dark in color, clamped fins, heavy breathing, tail standing, huddled in the corners, losing slime coat, cloudy eyes, etc.

This was most likely attributed to stress from the shipment, cold temperature. I was hoping to avoid treating them but that was not the case. After a 4 hour PP bath, they were happier than some hippos! ;)

Thanks for the comment and have a Merry Christmas!

Hey there Robyn, I generally don't treat for tapeworms but, I had some ideas about it. They are a wild cross but still, not too sure on how they acquired them. They are happy as some hippos now though, no worries. :D

Quick little update....they are showing a little more red. They get colored up alot in peat tinted water. This was just after their water change.

Been several weeks since I updated on these. They are doing fantastic! I have to say, I am a hard a$$ when it comes to making the fish eat what I want them to eat, or get them used to the environment I want them in but these fish broke me. They do not like lights, AT ALL!!! Not even a dim light. They need darkness and tannins in the water. Oh well, if thats what makes them happy, I am happy with that. Can't believe they broke me.....:o LOL I am a stubborn person, probably the most in the world but these Solomon Cross beat me. :D

Knowing you, you probably tried cardboard under half the light and feed only on the bright side of the tank. If not, Al's idea usually works by moving them.

-al

Thanks Al, I appreciate it. I haven't tried moving them to another tank. Its weird though, this tank is the most secure, the higher tank, all sides covered. I can get a dim light on them only if the water is super tinted. They do well with Catapala leaves floating at the top but the leaves always end up floating the bottom. I may have to rig up net across the top to get the leaves to float just above the water or have the leaves lay on top of the tank and elevate the light fixture. I tried 5 different fixtures, even a low 5 watt fixture has them uneasy.

I think I will make move and see what happens with them. I'll have to do some shuffling around though. :o The fish are eating Mal's Freeze Dried Blackworms, their favorite food. Thanks for the comment!

VERY VERY NICE my friend !! How old are they now and approx. how large ??

Thanks Dale, their 5th bar is more prominent and 6/7 are also a bit darker. Their color comes in really good with the tannins in the water. They are about 5 inches TL at the moment, so hopefully can get some more growth on them. One of the females was shaking up near the sponge filter, don't want her laying yet though. I've moved things around and she's off it now. :o

Take care all and thanks for the comments+inputs. I'll have to really think about moving them. Have a great week!

Thanks Erik, got 2 pieces of driftwood in the tank now, no sand though. The amount of water I change daily keeps the tannins low. May do sand later but I am still feeding pretty heavily so this would make things hard to keep clean. ;)

My wild greens hated the light at first - it took them quite a while. It was a shame, 'cause with only the room light, the tank was too dark to show their potential up.

Glad you can finally enjoy yours, in their full beauty, in good lighting.

Thanks Robert...I am satisfied for sure. The group is really taking to the manzanita wood and adding my baby plecos has really eliminated any and all fungus on the wood. Thinking of adding some rooting plants soon as well so I am trying to build a nice home for them. Something to make them more at home....a home away from home, if you will. :D

Oh yeah, they should do good! Depends on the nutrients in the water. I did it in the past but didn't like the look of domestic hybrids with the wood and roots. Also never had plecos to keep things under control. Now I'm able to keep things under control and I like the look of these Solomon Crosses in a more natural environment.

I used bamboo shoots a long time ago and it was recommended to not submerse the entire stalk. I ended up laying the bamboo along the top of the tank and the roots just made there way down into the tank.

Hey Eddie,

How long have you been using mal's blackworms? It seems like you're confident enough to use it almost exclusively now, right? The reason I'm asking is, that I have been using for about 2 months and it's the food my fish love the most, by far! But 2 months is not long enough to draw my own conclusions. I'm moving away from beef heart for now, but I still don't know if it is the right thing to do.

Any reason why you're not using pellets, like the 1.5 fry starter? What about frozen food? Cleanliness or you don't think it's as good as mal's worms and ON prime reef?

Thanks!

Eddie
04-28-2010, 07:56 PM
Hey there Waters, info you requested. ;)

How long have you been using mal's blackworms?

4-5 months

It seems like you're confident enough to use it almost exclusively now, right?

Mal's worms are an integral part of my fishes diet. They pack on size! I feed them to fry all the way to adult. I wouldn't say I use them exclusively. I have just under a dozen tanks and I feed all my tanks different foods. Between all the tanks, I feed my seafood mix, Mal's worms, Fry Starter 1.5mm, ON Prime Reef and Garlic Flake.

Any reason why you're not using pellets, like the 1.5 fry starter?

I do feed the fry starter 1.5mm, to all my breeding pairs. I have 5 pairs at the moment that get primarily the Fry Starter 1.5mm and every once in a while, Mal's worms.

What about frozen food? Cleanliness or you don't think it's as good as mal's worms and ON prime reef?

I do feed my frozen mix, just not in the Lago Solomon tank. This tank has manzanita wood, and alot of rooting plants so I try to keep extra clean. Using Mal's worms and Prime Reef, keeps the tank/water super clean. ;)

Take care!

Eddie

That's what I wanted to hear! :D I think I'll stop BH for now and just use mal's worms as my main food, along with pellets, flakes and hikari frozen foods.

Do you mean the Lago Solomon tank? If so, its because I want to put more size on the Solomon Crosses at the moment and they fully engorge themselves with Mal's worms. Once they get to a size where I am more concerned about coloration, then the Fry Starter 1.5mm will be used. Its not a set in stone practice, I do like to switch things around from time to time.

Yeah, I meant the lago solomon tank. Cool, thanks for the answer! I'm happy to know you trust mal's worms as a good food during grow out. In my case, I have adults mixed with juvies, so it makes more sense to mix in other foods as well.

Thanks Paul, these are my faves. :D Seems I have some early spawning activity going on these past few days. Fingers crossed!

Take care,

Eddie

Wow those are red fish, very nice Eddie. Cool plants too, plants always make a tank imo.

They do well with Catapala leaves floating at the top but the leaves always end up floating the bottom. I may have to rig up net across the top to get the leaves to float just above the water or have the leaves lay on top of the tank and elevate the light fixture.

Eddie finally caught up with this thread. I amreally happy to see them in such a beautiful, natural looking tank. The fish themselves, well they are Stunning!

Did you come up with a solution for the leaves?

Thanks Robyn, I've skipped the leaves for the time being. I'll start adding them in the future again though. For now I am just feeding them like crazy since they've worked up a huge appetite, not sure why, maybe some spawning soon. Hopefully!

Take care,

Eddie

LOL, I'd love to update on these but I won't see them until the 26th of June as I have been in the states since the 8th of June. The wife says they are still swimming so that is always a good sign. LOL :D

Well, since my Solomon X set back, they are finally starting to come around. Not all of them are 100% but they are all eating and thats what counts. 2 months without eating really took a toll on them, I thought they were goners. Anyways, here is one of my favorites, I think its a she and she has come around the most from the group.

Man, thats some crazy stuff, love that black/dark blue halo ring and that prominent looking solomon bar! They've coloured up nicely, hope they are gonna gain back some real weight and size after no food for some period of time...same question, how big are they SL/TL?

Eddie I think that they went off food late enough so that it didn't take as big a tole on them as if they were younger. They still look great and are on my list of favorite discus.

Thanks guys, these guys were my pride and joy and had me totally freaked until I figured out what was wrong. It took them such a long time to recover from whatever toxin was affecting them. I am still babying them by feeding them finely shaved mix. A few more are really coloring up and I actually have a few others at the cone shaking!!! :D

Kevin, all of them are 5 in TL so I doubt they will get too much bigger but you never know.

I love the ones with the thick bar the most, it's so attractive. They have some very nice spots on their gill plate, and some on their body too (I wonder if they will eventually line up when they get older like turqs do?) 5"TL doesn't sound that bad, I'm sure they will become 6" one day :D They really have been getting that high bodied appearance and I like it, make them look majestic!

Thanks, I like the high body shape too. I am hoping to keep the dark fifth bar going to the offspring. Who knows, if I can find a willing female, I might toss her in with my Heckel Cross and see comes from that. ;)

Take care man,

Eddie

One of the best highs in my hobby is having these guys back to eating again and thriving! They are tearing up food again and displaying so well these past few days. Very content with how they are doing now, since they were ill for 2 months. Got one female shaking on the cone too and I was certain it was a male! :o
