View Full Version : ARD X Blue Scorpion

Made some moves and figured I'd try swapping some wives around. The Blue Scorpion and Albino Red Diamond spawned about 4 days after the move. The ARD drops a decent amount of eggs for an albino. :o Gonna upload a video of the spawning in action in a few minutes.

OMG... I instantly thought of that TV show and always hated the title and concept, but have been sucked in to watching it...LOL

Leave it to you Eddie to start up your little discus drama. Can't wait to see the video and who knows...maybe it will replace American Idol or X Factor. :D

Looking good Eddie. Maybe they are happier with the new partner lol. Do you know what kind of off-spring they would produce?

Would be hard to know, without knowing the genetics of the Blue Scorpion. None of the fry would be albino, just gene carriers. ;)

Yeah, me too! The female is about 6 TL and the Blue Scorpion is 6+. I gave up measuring fish anymore, too much stress and fin rot can set in. Maybe next time I move fish around, I'll see if I can put him on a plate. :D

Thanks Scott, its just the confirmed female/male fish. Never had any problems between pairs, EXCEPT for the ARD X ARD. :(

In good time my brother....in good time. :D

Thanks guys, so far so good. All the wrigglers have been moved to other side of cone as of this morning. Took these shots last night. Seems like the female is more chill on this spawn. The Blue Scorpion is very protective of them. I think his gonna be a good dad. Hopefully thats all the Albino Red Diamond female needed.........was a good man. :D

Chris

Thanks Chris, the eyes get so much more red when he is in his breeding colors. Even the picture makes them look less red than they really are. Hope these little buggers go free swimming tonight. Today was the first water change and all went well with that. Both fish are still watching the little swarms on the cone. Keep the fingers crossed.

Take care and hope you are having a great weekend!

Born this morning. I am keeping the female with the fry, even though she is notorious for eating them. The male Blue Scorpion seems to keep her in check. Cone removed

Thanks Joan....actually the only time she didn't eat the fry was her very first time and she wasn't fed for 2 weeks, no water change, no bio-filter. Came home from vacation and wrigglers were going free swimming. Since then, can't get her to stop. She's doing good so far, mouthing the fry and putting them on dad or the glass. :o

Mom was removed, saw her lash at one and badly damaged it. No more chances for her. She is just gonna get pimped out to all the males. :o

Picture from tonight, all are well attached to Dad. Instead of counting sheep jumping over a fence, I'll count fry jumping over a dorsal. :D

Thanks Connor, yes I do water changes. The tank is a 55 gallon, divided with Poret Foam from Hans. I gently clean the tank bottom and sides with a sponge and then gravity drain the all the debris. Right now, its easy because the fry are all attached to dad, so they go where he goes. I am only doing 50% changes during this time, but as they start eating other foods, I will increase the water changes to 50% twice daily.

5 days old, they have been feeding on Golden Pearls 50-100 micron starting on day 3 and today they are now feeding on 200-300 micron. My method to keep the GP floating throughout the water column, is to use a a decent size airstone, pushing alot of air at the center of the tank. Barely anything lays on the floor. Hard to see, but the second picture shows the GP in the bellies.

What is the difference between ARD and Albino Leopard ?

Very similar but the Albino Red Diamond has straiting lines in the head and they break into spots, almost like a spotted Turquoise. If you look at the old school Red Diamond (non-albino), you would see that it was very similar to a turq and the lines would break into spots. ;)

Thanks for comments folks!

I am ecstatic with this group! Not a single loss and growing like champs. They are feeding off of Dad and ONLY eating #1 Fry Food from Angel Plus. I will be removing Dad in 4 days and introducing pureed porkheart (vitamin fortified). Now, the one thing that I've done different with this batch, is increase the TDS of my water from day one free-swimming. They are STRONG!

Wowsers! Great batch of fry Eddie, what did you use to increase the TDS and what did you bring it up to?

Eddie
02-17-2010, 11:37 PM
Thanks Hendri and Joan!

I brought the TDS up to 300-350, using calcium chloride and magnesium sulfate. The reason for doing this, was the HIGH amount of deformities I had in my last batch of fry. There were a large number of short gill plates, concave gill plates and deformed pectoral fins. It was almost 95% of the whole batch. My tap water TDS is about 80, so its great for spawning/hatching but not good for raising IMO. After reading alot and finding out possible causes, I decided to increase the TDS. Hopefully this will do the trick. ;)

Take care,

Eddie

Your fry look great Eddie! I guess that raising the TDS makes sense when raising fry. All of those growing youngsters would need alot of calcium and other minerals I would think. It'll be interesting to compare their developement to some of your earlier fry. Best of luck with them.

Thanks Dave and Scott! I introduced them to porkheart yesterday, so they are getting used to it still. They are accustomed to the small particle food, so I have to break it for them to start feeding on it. Aside from that, they are still killing the ground blackworm and #1 Fry Food. I'll definitely be keeping everyone updated on these. It should be an interesting end product!

Thanks Mark! Nope, no BBS at all. They went off it about a week ago and I only had them on it for 2 days. BBS are not as nutritionally sound as most dry foods. Also, BBS can foul the water very fast, unlike clean dry foods. ;)

Just until they get onto other foods. Once I had them taking the #1 fry food and ground worms, live BBS were done. At the moment I have them eating alot of Golden Pearls in an autofeeder. Got a little internal filter keeping the tank floor clean and moving the GP around the tank. All is gravy ATM. :D

Hey Eddie,

Thx for the great pics... It really tells the story. Looks like you have some barless beauties in there for sure. I use the GPs and live BBS. I find if I use too much of either it fouls the water. You keep your tanks very clean... You have too much TIME on your hands. Go shopping with the wife, haha....

Are you aging water? I think you do right. I don't (not that I am proud to say this) but my arrangement does not allow me keeping and managing barrells. I do 30% max 50% water change. But I do notice that if I don't add prime, babies do have some impact for some time.

Hey there Ashay, I do age my water for my fry only, to degas the water. My water had a lot of gas and can stress my fishes out if its not gassed out enough.

Eddie, didn't know you like to fish also. Good luck on your trip. Wish I could get some tuna around here now. We are having an awesome cod run though, the last 3 winters. Spring is around the corner and then we have a few more choices. Whats the weather like in Japan this time of year? Sorry to go off topic on your thread, it's just fishing is my medicine, my hobby and at times my job. I live to fish, I fish to live. Post some pics of your catch when you get back. Thanks Kev, I wish I knew! May be some turks or leopards. Its really going to be a surprise. It will depend on the genetics of the mother. Her non albino form is Red Diamond which is similar to a turq but with broken lines/spotting. Can't wait to see them mature!

Thanks Vince, will surely keep the updates coming. This group is gonna be my dedication to adult. I will have to grow them out to breeders, to see their full potential. The fry are extremely light colored, almost golden. I don't have any other fry at the moment. Nothing else on the cone either. My Leopard and PE will not spawn on anything except a chunk of seafood mix! I am not even kidding! hey I think I got it!!!

Take a chunk of seafood mix, cover it with some cheesecloth, and put it in the tank... then, if they DO end up trying to lay on it... then you can take out the cheesecloth, and they get seafood mix as a treat for doing a good job...

OR.....

next time you make some mix, take out the cone and "paint" a thin layer on the cone... drop it in.... then use a turkey baster to swish off the remaining seafood mix leaving just the eggs alone on the cone...

Good luck!!! That's funny though...

Cheers,
