I am planning on setting up a 125 gallon tank with some driftwood and plants attached to the driftwood only like moss, anubias, java ferns, etc on substrate bare bottome....Well anyways I was thinking of using a sponge filter or two would that work or should I just buy a canister filter instead? I have never used a sponge filter in an aquarium so I have no experience with them..... so any input would be great :D
Thanks
Javier

Sponge filters work great in my bare bottom tank with driftwood ... Cheap and easy to clean.

I don't know how efficient it would be in tanks with plants.

What size fish that you gonna get? If juv, you will need more than(sponge) that a specially 14 bar. 14 bar need clean water to avoid sickness. Or you could try see how's look. Or you could add two AC 110

I had a 125 with juveniles. I used two Aquaclear 110s and four Hydro III sponge filters.

You said that:p:p:p:p:p, you will needed. Having Juv you need to extra feeding and extra wc, so you will need kinda like Roberto

Is is true that those 14 bar strains are the weaker strains ? Seems like every time I have sick fishes, it would be those 14 bars LSS ... I have power filters and sponge filters .. and do 90% WC every two days .. Perhaps I need to do big 100% daily WC, like Eddie... Hmmm..

Thanks for all the info on sponge filters, but now I have another question. I have been reading how great wet dry filters are. I wanted to try a DIY wet dry filter...anyone have any experience with one on a discus tanks?

Dunno about LSS, but both my BS and RSxAF fish, from Kenny, are extremely healthy. They're 14 bar fish. Don't have any 9 bar fish for comparison, but it'd hard to imagine them being any healthier...

I run a cascade 1200 canister on one tank and a wet/dry on the other, with sponge filters, too, change 50% of the water daily...

They work as well on a discus tank as on any other tank. There's nothing special about any filtration that is unique to discus, other than getting lots of clean water without a lot of turbulence or strong currents. And no style of filter is going to eliminate siphoning chores or water changes.

No, I wasnt trying to eliminate any siphoning chores or water changes...I just wanted to get the best filtration possible on my budget....in order to get the cleanest water possible for my discus. I still plan to do daily w/c no matter what filtration I have.:)

ive got tanks with all sorts of filtration, sponges,a wet dry ,and 1 hob magnum wich is really old (it's actually a regent filter but they are the same)and i have never had to buy anything for it!!! over 10 years. the wet drytank is heavily planted and the discus love it. no real benifit though other than the water is always extremly clear:D

So you dont see much of a difference between the filters? I currently have some discus in a heavy planted tank as well but I find it extremely difficult siphoning all the poop and stuff off the substrate will all the plants in the way...how do you do it? Thats why I was planning on setting up a 125 gallon tank bare bottom

I run a Hagen FX5 plus 3-#5 sponges and an Aquaclear 110 on my 90's. I think that is about right. I also use intake sponges on both the FX5 and Aquaclear (cleaned daily).
