Big Al's has the power 70 filter on sale for $19.99

For those that don't need the big brother AC110, this is a great price for the smaller HOB filter.

Is this the same filter as the Aquaclear 70? I noticed Big Al's list two separate filters with names that are very close. I ordered two of these with some points I had accumulated on their site for another $10 off. Also got the free shipping. Sweet....

Awesome thanks for the follow-up. I did the same thing and they mentioned it might not come with the same bio media. At this price it's a no brainer as the bio media is pretty cheap.

I have not used this filter before but the price looks too good not to order. So it comes with foam and carbon .. Do you guys use a pre-filter foam ?

Can I get this foam insert and use it as a pre-filter ?
http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18430/si1383279/cl0/bigalsfoaminsert20x35x525
What size of should I get ? the 2.5" ? 3.5" or 4.75" ?

Also, do you replace the carbon with the bio-media ?
http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18409/si1382770/cl0/aquaclearbiomaxinsertf30070

I was looking to buy some Emperor 280 .. but seems like this is a better deal.

aquaclear are like the best hob around. you can costumize your media you can put anything in it that fits. just cut the foams pads or whatever to the size you want. i think only thing the deal doesnt come with is the biomax but you can get it at your local fish store.

Do you think this would be good for my 40gal tank? I have a cheap petco brand filter that's breaking apart on me. It rattles pretty loud every so often and I use zip ties to hold the tubes together :(

My main concern is that it advertises for 50-70 gals. Is there such thing as too much filtration? Waiting for an expert opinion before I hit the purchase button ;)

The max output for the Aquaclear 70 is 300 gallon per hour. It's rated for 40g to 70g
http://www.marinedepot.com/filters_hagen_aquaclear_power-ap.html

I learned from other experts before that we need flow rate 10x of your tank size. So, the Aquaclear 70 is not even enough for a 40g tank.

I am currently use an Emperor 280 for my 40g tank. That filter has a 280G flow rate and it's working very well for me. I was looking to buy more Emperor 280 until I saw this deal. I like the media option and the sales price, of course.

BTW, the more filtration, the better .. If indeed you have a 70g tank, I don't think this filter is powerful enough.

Oh, ok. Amazon advertises 50-70g, I wonder why. I was patient enough to wait for a good deal on a good filter, this would be a good replacement.

Thanks for all the info diamond!

I have one of these on a 30 gallon tank. Works perfectly. I do use a foam pre-filter. I picked up some 2 1/4" square air conditioner weather seal at home depot that works great for this purpose. For $3 it will make a lot of pre-filters.

I use the AC70 on my 30 and 40 gals tank and it's plenty of filtration. I would not use the AC70 on tank bigger than the 55gal because from my experience, it would not fit in tank such as a standard 75gal. The plastic frame of these larger tank will not allow the ac70 to hand securely.

A foam pre-filter is a piece of foam that you stick at the end of the sucking tube right? I think I read about that somewhere in the forum. I'll keep that in mind though.

I didn't mean to hijacking this thread but thanks for the help everyone.

Wow, a 400 for a 29G tank ? I am using a 280 for my 40G and it seems to be plenty enough. I do agree that the Emperor filter are a bit noisy .. That's why I plan to use those in my garage fish room only and use this Aquaclear 70 for tanks inside the house. I ordered only two last night ... and I regret already .. In addition to my 75 and 30 gallon tanks I'm going to be adding a second 75 gallon to my collection. I'll be using two of these AC-70 power filters plus a couple of sponge filters.

On my other 75 gallon I have an AC 110 and a Eheim Canister running. On my 30 gallon I have a single AC-70 running. Water is always crystal clear. They are great versatile filters.

Well I ordered two of these thinking I could use them on a 75 and 30 gallon tank I have. The 30 gallon setup works fine. However the AC 70 won't fit over the lip of the frame on my new 75 gallon tank. I had planned to use a new Rena XP3 and this AC 70 on this tank. Now re-thinking my decision. I really hate to modify the tank frame to make this fit. Just an FYI for any of you planning on using this on the medium to large tanks.

an AC70 will not fit on most standard 75gal glass tank. The top Plastic trim has a wider lip than the 55gal. For some tank manufactuer (such as Oceanic) they use this wider frame on their smaller tank such as the 38 gallon.

The AC110 is a beast! It will fit in almost any tank. I use it in my 180gal acrylic and there is probably over 1" between the side and the opending of the tank.

Like I stated earlier, it depends on the manufacturer. I have a rare 38 gal from oceanic (24x18x18) and the top frame is the same width as my 75gal.

Yes that is the tank I have. I have a AC 110 and canister running on an existing 75 gallon so I know a 110 fits fine. Both tanks are identical and made by Aqueon which also makes Oceanic tanks. I just did not realize that the 70 model had a smaller mount. It only needs about an 1/8 inch more to fit.

Mine came today and I see what the deal is, It is the same AquaClear 70 but is packaged in the old AquaClear box's that were brown with a label on the front they used those before going to the pretty new aqua blue box's.

So all you are getting thats different in the newer blue box vs the brown box is ceramic bio rings, it still has the foam sponge and charcoal media included in the brown box. along with a $30 savings.

Sweet Deal!!! :)

I've had several running for years with no issues. (70's and 110's) They don't like grit or sand getting into the impellor or intake. Make sure you have enough clearance between the intake tube and bottom of the tank.

I would agree that sand or grit may have made it's way into the power head/impleller assembly.
Now Hagen usually has great customer service but if you picked up this filter during the past boxing day sale which came in a brown box without media...it was a one time sale and will not be able to be replaced. You will have to pay the difference for the regular packaged ones.
