View Full Version : Solid Red Snakeskin

Been 2 months and time 4 an update. They are a little banged up from their recent move. I swapped tanks around, so they are in a blue tank. Some of them are starting to get striations in the face. Not adding any red enhancing foods yet, still growing them out.

Nice Fish Eddie. That first picture is interesting I've never seen stress bars like that before. It looks like the bars are intersecting rather than straight up and down, is that normal for young ones?

Thanks everyone, they are my favorites at the moment, well...my Blue Scorpion Albino Intermediates are but these are second! :D

Underwater, stress (mood) bars can pretty much do anything, although quite some time ago, breeders preferred straight bars. It is not the case much anymore, maybe with some breeders but many discus have intersecting/connecting mood bars. ;)

Hey Eddie,

Has these "brown sharks" gotten their red colouring or any resemblance of their parents yet? I'm sorta anxious on how they look since the last update :p They've gotten their shape and now its time to see them colour up nicely, hopefully turn out as nice as the mother :D

Here are some of the other fish he's working with. Click on the thumbnails to see some of the parent fish or adults.

Getting more reddish, seems like your trick on adding more carotene content into their food is doing the trick. I can't imagine how they would look during their adult colouration, but I know they will do as nice as their parents :)

Might be and also, I was thinking, the black may just be more pronounced during breeding/fry rearing so it may be normally blue and just get dark when they are displaying breeding colors.

Reason being?

Ah Kev, its because Mom is not a snake. These 14 bar (snake) surely carry the 9 bar gene (from Mom) and when crossed together, there will more than likely be both 9 and 14 bar fish. This isn't always the case with snakes but since Mom is not a snake, it opens the door for 9 bar offspring. ;)

If that's the ventral fins, what is the pelvic fins, I always thought that those are the pelvic fins.

Have you got any ideas as to why the 'ventral fins' are split and would they be passed onto the offspring?

Yes they can be called pelvic fins also Kev.

http://www.discusnada.org/discus/anatomy.html

Some fish develop split ventral fins but its best if both are uniform not one split and one not. I wouldn't have a clue as to whether or not it would be passed on but if they do, I'm game. :D

They will have some facial pattern though, they are snakeskin and judging from the parents (the female), it could turn out like her.

LOL, no worries, no silly questions. They are being fed color enhancing foods now. As they were growing out, I didn't use anything special to enhance their colors because they were young. Young fish don't develop nice coloration until later. For me, getting them big and healthy is priority 1 and then I can concentrate on their colors once they mature into adults. These Red Snakes are sub-adults, still have a some growing to do but displaying some nice colors already.

No I'm serious though. Ever since I've been in and out of the house, I have investigated ways of increasing nutrient absorption from water since I cannot feed them often or change their water often. Seems to be working out. ;)

Thanks for the comment!

+1, They are gorgous! So Eddie, what are you using to increase the GH & Kh? Any special product? And what levels are you keeping your hardness at?

Thanks Joan!

2 things, Seachem Reef Builder and Kent Liquid Calcium Chloride. I have actually switched to Seachem Calcium Reef Advantage in place of Kent. ;)

Not that big, probably 5.5"+. They've gone for quite a while with 1 feed a week to one feed a day since all the issues at home. :(

Eddie,

Have you ever seen someone selling something similar in the states? These are the most badass fish I have seen. I would sell most of mine to buy some.

Nope, can't say that I have. Most SS varieties available in the US are full bodied pattern or scorpions. Thats why I liked these so much, they have a real nice red/brown base and only minimal striations in the face and fins. I'm hoping to breed them in the coming months. I can't wait to see them in their breeding colors. You know I'll be posting pictures!

Take care,

Eddie
