What is the biggest/largest/heaviest discus that was ever known? Was it 9"? Does anybody have any pics of giant discus?

Biggest discus I've seen in person was at the local hardware store here in Japan. Biggest fish EVER!! Imagine that a breeding cone is roughly > 9 inches tall.

I went to a lfs the other day, in another city, and a girl working there who has discus at home swears she has a wild discus that is as big as a dinner plate! I sure would like to see it!

People exaggerate, that's for sure. I suspect that a very few discus can exceed 9", but that's extremely rare. Kenny offered some snakeskins awhile back that were an honest 8", and a couple of my blue scorps really, really, are 7". They're as large as any I've seen in person, but then I haven't seen a whole lot of discus, either, except in pictures...

Most of the time, you can subtract an inch from however large people claim adult discus to be, land pretty much on an accurate measurement... sad but true...

The biggest discus that I ever had measured 6 3/8 inches WITHOUT its tail. Never measured him with his tail.

For the last several years anytime someone makes a dumbass claim on the size of their discus I have asked them to put the fish on a towel with a tape measure and take a picture. No one ever post their results. This is mainly because when they measure their discus they are not near as big as they thought they were.

John, if we measure you we include your feed too (or there was not much left lol) Discus come with a tail (or mine do) so why not include the tail?????

Most write ups say - Heckels up to 8" and the others up to 6". I think anything 8" or larger is more of a genetic anomaly and nothing to be proud of - should be frowned upon.

I tried looking at those Hans photos - they are sooo tiny!

Could not make out the numbers on the ruler.

I had to make them so tiny, if I would keep them the real size they won't fit on your screen lol lol lol

The men's world record for the men's 2kg discus throw is held by Jurgen Schult of Germany with a throw of 74.08 meters in 1986. :D

Sorry I had to.

I remember a discussion about this about the same time last year. Walter posted some photos of Hans discus and they are truly giant. If you look at the end of the post, you can see the large ones that Kenny sold about 2 years ago.

The biggest one I knew by far is the giant LSS from Lee Tong Juan a few years ago in competitions (sorry don't remember which), also another one from Tony Tan...they are both said to be around 10'' TL.

I think that some of the very largest specimens seem to have lost a certain... grace, for lack of a better word. They look like they're overstuffed, cartoonish, out of proportion... I feel the same way about some of the extreme hifins, standing egg and bulldogs, too. Really beautiful discus have balance between all the desirable elements...

Just me, I guess...

Do 'em up with Franks Chicken wing sause and have 'em with cold beer.

Kids fingers is an inside joke, if I get families in I tell the kids not to touch my filter foam, if they do...... I show them the meat grinder and tell them we feed the big Discus, grind up kids fingers (from those who touched the foam) kids are never a problem in my fish house lol

No idea, we sold most of them after the show, think I brought to Atlanta 50 adults for in the show. 6 Went to a store, the rest we sold at the show, they went all over the place, some even to Bermuda. We sell our Show Discus after the show for $150.00 each.

lol way too much info there Hans!!! Im sure you do breed well at 6'4" haha

Just remembered hearing about super large discus being unable to breed, but that may have been in regards to fish raised using hormones to get them huge fast, believe it was tied to asian breeders a while back, may have been a scare tactic on someones part though.

sounds pretty harsh story for kids Hans but I am sure they listen after that!!

At first: Yep, kids listen to me lol lol Ask Ashay :D

For the big Discus, there are all kind of story's, I can only tell for the Stendker's, those big ones will breed, no problems. Think you can find some prove about that here and there :D

Definitely some amazingly big fish here but where are you measuring to and from? I have always measured from the tip of the nose/mouth area to the caudal peduncle and not include the fins or tail otherwise an older male with a big dorsal extension could be measured a few inches longer.

For example I would have said these were between 6 and 7 inches.

When you catch a fish while fishing you measure from tail to mouth to determine if it meets the size requirements to keep for eating, so I would think this would be the same here.

Would love to see them Hans. Do you currently have larger discus for sale? I may be in the market soon but I know for sure I am not up for growing out. I just want one display tank and adults is what I would be looking for. I wish I could go to TX to get some of your $150 after the show discus. I would buy 6 or 8 off the bat :-)

$150.00 is not going to do it anymore, that was 4~5 years ago.

I still have a few very nice adults here, Thursday I get about a 120 more in.

I have a blue pigeon that is from Hans. It came to me at about seven already. I haven't measured him in a long time but he's the biggest discus I have. He may be on the verge of eight but catching him in a 125 gallon is difficult except at water change time. I will try next water change which is tomorrow. If I can get him on a towel and keep him still I will measure and photograph. Hans can verify how big he was when i got him and who would not believe Hans?! I also have a Jumbo Dark Angel that is almost as big as the BP. Also from Hans.[URL=http://s1332.photobucket.com/user/Rudustin/media/IMG_0962_zps3251b254.jpg.html]http://i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w615/Rudustin/IMG_0962_zps3251b254.jpg[/URL[URL=http://s1332.photobucket.com/user/Rudustin/media/IMG_0972_zps6aeeb499.jpg.html
