I have been noticing my filter is sucking bloodworms and other gunk when I forget to turn it off, so I thought it was about time to get a pre-filter on it. After reading old posts on SD it appears that getting a cheap sponge and placing over my magnum 350 intake screen would be the best solution, but I have a problem. Where do I get said sponge? I been to a few grocery stores but all they have are the large anti-microbial sponges which I doubt would work. Any recommendation for sources (chain stores/etc.) for an aquarium friendly sponge that would work?

use aquaclear sponges in a snap. But on ebay there is a store called aquatic magic that has them for like 3 bucks for two very nice prefilters, in bright yellow to truly show filth. I bought a pair and they work better then the AC sponges do due to size of sponge pores.

...getting a cheap sponge and...

If you're keeping discus, you don't want a cheap sponge. Save those for if you're keeping goldfish. Prefilter sponges are inexpensive enough that, unless you need 100 or so, you can afford the real ones.

I'm just going by old posts from carol roberts who state that regular sponge type pre-filters are fine for discus. I only mention "cheap sponges" because they are primarily the ones without antibiotic treatments and additives.

I don't really care how much they cost but finding something to fit my magnum 350 filter intake is what is a priority to me. I tried getting a prefilter at the LFS but only the only material they had was the aquaclear coarse, which didn't really suit my application due to it coarseness and ill fit.

I use the Filter max that Ken (kensfish.com) sells:

Cheap and work great.

You think the one above would be ok for a really big tank? 75g-250 gallon tanks running at my house and pre-filtration would be a plus. I like the non DIy factor.

The question is just about using a sponge as a prefilter, not so much as a media for bio filtration. Cheap is fine just to catch the stray bloodworms and the such. Any aquaclear sponge is fine or there are many other sponges that can be used. Just get it, cut it to size/make your insert hold and slap her on there.
