A couple of shots of my newly acquired Nhamunda Blue Wilds.

Have been keeping Heckels and Altums earlier. Heckels without success and Altums with great success.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it! :)

Here's a full tank shot. Shot without a flash and it's extremely hard to nail the white balance, hence the yellowish color scheme. Water is quite brown and I use a single old and tired yellow T8 tube as light source, just as it's supposed to be... :p

Tank is 99 G.

Thanks Vera! :)

These guys are just fantastic! The importer got them directly from Manaus, Brazil two weeks ago, I got them the day before yesterday and they are already acclimatized. No signs of stress or dislikeings. I have never before seen Discus, wild or captive bred, acclimatize that fast. The hierariky fight within the group has already started and there's no doubt who's the alfa animal.

Best of luck
Which Altums did u have (Orinoco) or others ?

Ouscazz
04-06-2010, 08:29 AM
Thanks Vera!

There is only one true P. Altum, the Orinoco Altum. All others are P. Scalare.
My group of P. Altums were, according to Heiko, from Rio Inirida wich is part of the Orinoco River basin.

Ouscazz

Thanks. No, I don't have them anymore.

Absolutely fantastic looking fish, but actually, I got really bored with them. They are not at all like discus, they eat, crap and swim.. like goldfish.. Discus interract with humans, Altums don't, at least mine didn't.

I'm also a bit stubborn in my way of doing aquarium photography, constantly refusing to use a flash. Instead I did put my money in a high end camera housing which can handle high ISO settings without ridiculously high levels of noise. Most of my photos in a session goes straight in the trash bin due to motion blur. But when I occassionaly make a good one, it's really worth the effort.

That is my way of creating true to life aquarium photographs.

But you're right, using flash destroys the photo! All I have is the original Digital Rebel and I was still blown away how little noise higher ISO had when compared to point and shoot cameras.

But you're using a freaking awesome lens! When I read "L", I knew it was an awesome lens! But then I searched for the exact model and I realized it's way beyond my league! :D There's no way around it. Every amazing fish picture I see on this or other forums, involve a high-end lens. I guessed a macro lens, cause I saw a lot of nice pics with the Tamron di Macro lens.

Yes, it's a nice lens... :D

Tank measurements are ~ 60" x 20" x 20"
Tank volume = ~ 96 US Gallon
WC = 2 x 30% weekly, ordinary tap water.
pH = around 7 - water filtered over Alder Catkins
Temp = 81F
Filtration = Eheim 2213 + 8W UV
Filtration = Fluval 304
Lighting = almost none...
Feeding = twice daily, varied frozen foods + D50 (no bh)
Stocking = 10 x Corydoras Sterbai - 5 x L200 - 6 x Nhamundá Blue Wild Discus

Hi

to Ouscazz: excellent, is it that my message of natural biotope is really more and more being used? It makes me very happy, every detail is correct and the fishes look and feel great - they are telling me this... are they telling you also?
I would not do anything else. perfect. Thanks.

to Vera: i shall be soon (after the International Italian discus Championships April 16-18, towards end of the month) in Malta, maybe we can get together, will be there only a couple of days. My e-mail can be found on the lower bottom of my home page. Let me know.

Thanks a lot guys!

No, I have kept Heckels in 100% R/O water at pH 4,8. But it was way to hard to keep it stable so I had to back off and gradually/slowly change to tap water. The Heckels thrived in tap water too but didn't shine. My Altums were kept in tap water with great success and tremendous growth of the young ones.

I'm shooting my photos free hand, no tripod used.

Thanks alot Heiko, I'm really glad you liked my biotope scaping. The fish has been in there for four days only, and yes... by looking at their behaviour they are telling me everything is allright. The group love to cruise around the roots and branches in perfect sync and control, obviously they recognice their new environment in one way or the other.

Hi Vera,

I also see forward to Lecce, you will like it very much, not only is it a beautiful city, but the guys who organize this Discus Championships (the only one in Italy and for the 6th time - bi-annually which is perfect) are really great, you will see and see you there.

Just remember my two lectures are saturday morning and in the evening I must leave already again...

Have a good trip,

always

Heiko

PS:Ouscazz: Yes like in nature they swim in groups. But please feed them well, as thse have been for month without food at the collectors/shippers places. Take care

Ouscazz
04-20-2010, 04:46 PM
Ok, I'll try to explain... hope you don't mind my funny english... :p

The new light fixture is made by Hide-a-lite (try google.com). The fixture is set up with 5 x 1W Power LED 3000 Kelvin (warm white). These LEDs are a bit special since they have a lens mounted to the cabinet which projects and magnify the light with a 45° spreading angle.

The wilds seems to like it. I believe they feel comfortable with the very natural light and shadows the LEDs create compared to standard light tubes.

Sorry, only in Swedish.

Hi Ouscazz,

(I always write that name wrong, whish people use their own names...).

Fantastic what you did, this is how I see it nature all the time, I guess now you do not have to come with me on my next 3 Amazon-expeditions anymore (later this year), you already have. really great this ligt, like during day in nature (that is why I always tell people specially on wilds to give more shade...).

Yopu should send me a high resolution photos of it, 300dpi and 15 cm in length and I might still include it in my volume 2. Would be nice.

Keep up the great work, your discus love it...

I've added a new external filter to the tank, an Eheim 2075. Big improvement on the Discus activity, I guess the water is better aeriated due to the increased circulation created with the spray bar. Now I'm running a 2213 alongside the 2075, the 2213 is connected to an 8W UVC filter on the outlet side. Both filter canisters are stuffed with Eheim Filter media, bio and mech.

I love what you did with the lighting! However, in such dim lighting, can you even see your fish? :) I'm very interested in replicating the same effect in my biotope tank, but I'm afraid that it would detract from the viewing pleasure if the tank is so dark all the time. I know I don't really enjoy the tank when the lights are off!

Yes, I'm pretty sure it will be much better In Real Life (just for those who are wondering what IRL stand for). Would you mind sharing what you feed them?

Ouscazz
07-14-2010, 10:27 AM
:)

I feed them Super Vital 2000 discus mix (beef heart/fish), chopped frozen mussles, live mosquito larvae, blood worms, Australian black worms, D50 granulates & flakes, and so on.. after a couple of days they eat pretty much everything I present to them. They have gained a lot of weight and look a lot better compared to when I first got them. One of them refused to eat for a week but a huge water change and a light cure of Huey Hung Super Killer got him on better thoughts in a couple of hours. Now, all are feeding well and show no signs of illness or parasites.

Interesting, how long do you take your time looking at them per day :D

Keep us posted with your beautiful wilds :)

I do a quick check on them every morning before I head off for work. They usually get a snack in the morning, but not everyday as I don't want them to get on an absolute feeding routine. In the evening I do a thorough check on them while they are feeding, monitoring them for any signs of illness or other problems, it usually takes about half an hour. I'm mostly looking for general behaviour, breathing frequency and the size/shape/color/length of their stool droppings. If they leave any food behind I emediatly siphone it out of the tank and fill up with new tapwater. They are a bit sensitive to the "out of tank" environment, much more than tank bread Discus. Sometimes some of them feel a bit "off" and sits back under the Red Moore roots that are hanging from the top of the tank. One got to keep the nerves under control as it in 99/100 times is just nothing to worry about. The next day everything is usually back to normal. About once a week the don't get fead at all for a whole day, just to keep them on their toes... food everyday shall not be taken for granted! Water change has been reduced from the daily 20% I did in the beginning to about 30-40% twice a week.

Could I ask what you mean by "out of tank" environment? The fish,the tank,everything is just perfect,

Maybe a lingo barrier.. ;)

They are very sensitive to changes in the room where the tank is located, as well as new faces and bright colored clothing. I usually wear dark clothes and they tend to get a bit shy when I, or anybody, enters the room in light/bright colored clothes. We had a a party last sunday and there where a couple of small kids that wanted to have a look at my wilds. The wilds didn't like at all, they got scared and dark and sat back in the tank for two days. My tank bred Discus never react dramatic like that.

And oohh... thank you! :)

Beautiful is the word for your discus. Really nice & simple setup, and some gorgeous fish to add to its beauty.:)

I have a question for you Mats. Is your background painted? It looks black from the pics, but it's hard to see as your tank is wide. I'm just wondering what your thoughts are regarding discus and black backgrounds, as I am trying to figure out if I should paint the back of my tank which will eventually house discus.

I would like to know that too, specifically in reguards to this specific tank and wilds. I know their natural enviornment is dim anyway but do you find a black background to provide more depth to the tank from a viewing perspective?

How do you like the 20" wide? If space was no issue, would you rather it be wider?

Hi,

The outside of the rear glass is painted black. It's just my idea of creating a kind of infinite depth. I can't see any negative effects on the wild discus.

Hello,

Yes, I think the black paint simulates infinite depth but also a dim feeling to the environment which I believe is less stressfull for the wilds. I personally think the 20" tank isn't wide enough for large size discus. Mine has grown pretty large now. I'm looking for a larger tank for my wilds, both regarding length but also depth. I would like to have a ~ 250 x 80 x 60 cm tank holding 1200 liters (~300 gallons) of water. 200 x 80 x 60 = 960 liters (~240 gal.) would work fine too

Thanks. That's what I was hoping to hear. I like the extra depth black background give also. I'll go black (my tank is a square, so it'll be 30" wide).

Swell.. 30" wide will be nice. Is it a cubic 30" tank?
Hope to see some picts from your project. :D

Use paint for painting interior walls or ceilings, easy to remove with a razor blade if wanted.

I'm looking at getting a 24" wide tank, but it will only be 48". Still around 100gal. Hey I gotta work with what I got, and I don't have space for anything more then 4ft haha.

Well, it won't have discus in the beginning as I hope to get the tank settled in and my 2 young kids a bit older first (3 years and 1 year), so I'll start with some Geos and plecos and once everything is going well, I'm going to see if my schedule allows the maintenance I need for discus.

The tank is sort of a cube, but is not 30" high. It's only 24" high, but 30x30", as I thought 30" is a bit too high to easily work on. Here's a pic of the tank when I received it. It's drilled so I can direct plumb an Eheim 2078 into it with out intakes and outlets all over. I'm going to run a strainer and locline hidden by a stump.

Haven't seen Mats on here since 2011 but i thought I would just bring this to the surface in case people hadn't seen it. I know this tank inspired me to go wild way back when. I knew I had the subscription but I had 10 pages of subs, lol. Found it in the end though.

Just stumbled over this old thread.

Yes, it's correct. I left the aquaristic hobby a couple of years ago, it does not fit in the life me and my wife are living right now. We travel a lot and we had a hard time to find people that could take care of our aquariums during our long journeys. The aquariums were just to valuable for people to take responsibility for. So, we had to let them go. I do miss my discus a lot though and I will keep them again sometime in the future.

I'm very glad that my tank still inspire people, very glad. :)

Theese Blue Nhamundás was sold to a buddy who successfully bred them at least one time.
Here's a photo he posted on another discus forum, the F1's were three years old when the photo was taken.
