I too enjoyed the get together, met the people who are really into discus in the Bay Area. I wish the afternoon could have gone on much longer. But even in such a short time, I've learned so much about the history of the discus hobby here and even got a few "secrets of the trade". Thanks to everyone who was so generous with their time to speak of their journey in the wonderful world of discus.

A big thanks to Cliff for organizing the evert, the pizza, and some freebies! Also a quick thanks to Al for providing samples of the delicious (at least to my discus) FBWs.

Can't wait till the next one.

Yes, meeting some of the masters of discus was certainly an honor for me. After hearing of the BAD forum, I joined immediately and hope that all of us who live around the Bay Area will revived this site and make it a means for our unique community to share our passion for the "King" of tropical fish.

See you soon.

Hi Ben,
I hear Wayne moved to Sacramento because his company moved there but was able to make his way back to the Bay Area since his family lives S.F.
The white Butterfly Albino fry were all gone that day after the meeting, a broker took
everything. I already had a few people asking before the meeting but I didn't want to ship and another person actually came over yesterday and was wondering what happen to those fish, its a one way trip once they leave my hatchery.

The format will start with the main topic, following with open discussion then maybe a raffle. BAD is nonfunded, check with SFAS they invited Heiko back
in 88 or 89. SFAS and PCCA paid for the expenses, you still have to paid for membership to SFAS or PCCA and a entrance fee. You may want to buy a copy of Tropical Fish Hobbyist(www.tfhmagazine.com) Discus in SF.

Hey Bay Area, NorCal, West Coast Discus Hobbyists,

There are some folks in the East Bay/ South Bay trying to get a BAD meeting together in the next month or so. Please respond here or to Cliff (CliffsDiscus) if you are interested. I am interested in meeting people in our area and seeing what your up to. I'm interested in some of the ideas the East Coast guys are doing (Al's group and the Atlanta group). We may not make NADA 2014 in this area, but we could support a California show. Besides there is always NADA 2016.

Hi Perry,
We are going to visit a hobbyist in Daly City, he has a small operation around a dozen tanks, a very successful breeding operation. Well worth the visit for any
hobbyist who wants to pick up a few tips here and there.

Well we were finally able to gather a few people together for a meeting in Daly City. Present were:

Cliff (Cliffsdiscus)
John T and his family (host)
Perry (phat nyguyen)
Kip (SFAS board member)
Cal and his wife Helen (SFAS members)
Danny (SFAS member)
Ryan (Silicon Valley AS member)
Steve T (magewynd)

We would like to thank Cliff for putting this together and John for his hospitality and letting us into his fish room. It looks like John was quite the fish keeper at one time. He has two garage length racks in his basement. He is retired now and keeps just a few discus. Apparently Cliff gave John a few handfuls of dime size fry awhile ago and John grew them ALL out. They were plenty of Wattley lineage Turqs (all adults) and a LOT of white butterfly pigeons. I stopped counting the WB pairs when I got to eight. And there were fry from these. One of us was able to pick up a pair and a few nice fry from another pair for a good start.

What was interesting to me was these were artificially reared fry from Cliff that paired and were raising their fry naturally. Cliff said that these were a WB (Cary's)xStendker Fire Red. This was crossed with an albino for the fry that John raised. These were all real clean WBs. There were also a few Marlboro types that were grown out too. Cliff is an amazing resource of information and was very helpful in answering questions and sharing his knowledge. (Including mine, "Where did all the peppering go?" Took awhile to "splain" that to me.)

Later that evening a few of us made it to the SFAS meeting where a presentation was made about how the SFAS was instrumental in bringing brine shimp to the hobby as well as aquarium societies around the world as a food source. They started as a benefactor to Steinhart Aquarium in Golden Gate Park.

This was a great, but small meeting of discus enthusiast. Cliff plans on getting another meeting together in the early spring. He was able to get donations for raffles and would like to do a fish swap too. Johnnathan is willing to host one of these also. He's in Asia touring Discus farms now. Please look for future announcements and plan on joining us.

Hi Cliff,

I have a pair of what I call Albino Blue Diamonds that came with Fin-Tastik when I bought it from Phil Ng

The male is a Albino Blue Diamond and female is a Cobalt

I spoke to Phil today and he said they have the Bat Discus gene in them and I might get some from the fry.

I have about 40 fry from the pair, a little less then dime size and they are fanning a new batch of eggs ,,should hatch tomorrow.

Hi Sandy,
Dolphin will be closing at the end of this month, that's the word I got from one of their suppliers. Good fresh and salterwater fish come in on the weekend
to the wholesalers and get picked over also instantly, sometime they are already reserved too, so its more miss and hits.

After being away for 4 years, I am back in the hobby. I lost my friend Chai's phone number whom I used to get discus from so I dropped by his house last night and found that he has passed away 3 months ago. *sigh*. He was the only person I bought discus from so now I'm hoping to meet up with other Bay Area discus breeders so that we can share our experiences. These were some of his fish that I was helping him sell back in 2008: http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?63018-San-Francisco-Local-bred-discus!-LOCAL-PICKUP-ONLY!-WILL-NOT-SHIP!&highlight=
