Hi all,
Anyone here working with Crystal red shrimp? I've bred them in the past and am strongly thinking of doing so again.. I recently acquired some equipment that will be perfect for shrimp.

Anyone have a reputable source or want to sell some stock?

I have a friend on Aquariacentral goes by msjinkz and I got all mine from her. she is a moderator there and has all kinds of inverts she kinda specializes in. Id talk to her!

David

I tend to stick with the cherry red shrimp since they are in with the discus.

Its made by aquaticecosystems! The one I have has more bells and whistles including a supplimental blower and built in UV sterilizer.:)

Dang Al! You struck oil with that one. I can't believe they were going to toss it out! CRAZY! I can't tell you how many times I come across good deals on stuff (that I really don't need), but what you have here is special!

Good luck with the setup!

Nice Al! Mine is right around the 6-7gal mark. Some scrap glass was laying around after a sump project so I threw mine together. It holds water! ;)

Geez Al....sweet deal indeed!! Want to guess how much that baby cost new??! LOL. Let me know if you need any help getting it up and running.

P.S. we offer screened baffles (several different micron ratings I believe) to prevent the critters from going through the overflow.

I have started to work with the Tiger shrimp... some of mine have red striped, some are normal and others are getting blue. I found them a little more interesting then the crystal reds but plan to start working with those shortly. I order my shrimp from Theshrimptank.com. He has great shrimp and I never have any die. I even got babies with mine :).

Thanks Ryan,
I'm going be setting it up in the next week or so for a test run.....This thing is only a few years old at most. If I run into problems I know who to go to!;):)

make sure you use well seasoned water and sponges. they dont like new setups. crystal blacks are good also..and another one is green babaulits.
blue tigers are hard to come by but very desireable. or blue pearls.
cherries..if you start with 50 you can have well over a 1000 in about 6 months. not as expensive or unique..but the staple for aquarium trade. always buyers. i sell them for 2.00 each.
keep your eyes peeled for hydra. they will lasso and eat the babies.
heres a great forum. http://www.crustaforum.com/board/index.php

I am going to start working in the Opa' e ula or Hawaii red vulcan shrimp (Halocaridina rubra) mostly because of the ability and it seems fairly easy, as they are very strong shrimp and they get abuse a lot sell in glass sphere enclosures "so called ecosystems" and they don't get feed for years in some people's desk until eventually they died for starvation and poor water quality but not after live for up to 10 years in some cases.
Any way they are brackish type 1.014 specify gravity. and only need WC once a month.
so this is piece of cake compare to daily WC with my Discus.
If you want we can trade some I was trying to get some crystal for a while for my 90 gal that I had to storage at Fl.when the navy send me here.
Sincerely
Julian.

I have played with freshwater shrimp in the past and had very good luck with them. April is right all it takes is a few shrimp and wait and you will have tons.

Just make sure the genetics on you starter shrimp are are good as possible if you plan to sell them. Many of different colored (CR, BB,etc) freshwater shrimp can breed together they then start to revert to the wild type (usually not brightly colored) and you can't tell if a crystal red was breed accidentally with a bumble bee or whatever else. I had this problem with my LFS shrimp and slowly over the many many generations of breeding them (years) I lost a lot of the coloration.Maybe my next aquarium experiment will be to try to breed Amano algae shrimp, but they require a saltwater larva stage so it makes it a lot more difficult.

Have fun Al, I love watching shrimp in a aquarium they have a lot of personality.

good luck Al! great system. i have a 5g tank with 20 RCS, well a lot more now since they started breeding like crazy. i will dumping the babies into my 125 from time to time so it will not get crowded. i wanted to work with CRS but i didn't know of their breeding habits and some of them have too high a price tag for me. lastly, my goal for keeping rcs was the fact that i could just dump them into my 125 when it gets crowded. i wouldn't be able to do that with crs so i would have to sell them off. anyways, good luck and keep us posted for those that like their invertebrates.

There are a number of people selling crystal reds over in the "Swap n Shop" forum on plantedtank.net, though you have to have an account to see that forum at all. I personally bought a batch from greenisgood and was pretty happy with both the quality and the care taken with packing/shipping. It takes some patience and luck to get on her waitlist, though, since it fills up quickly.

I've heard good things about most of the regular sellers over there, as well.

Hi Al

CRs are facinating , tried many times , but they dont survive summer heat above 30 C
I kept and bred Sulawesi Harlequin shrimps -as colorful as marines and quite hardy

They have very striking colors!they breed in fresh water
mine were breeding in ph 7, gh 8 and T 25-28C
i would say very hardy shrimps , but best survival is in mature tank, i had their wood, rocks moss and water taken from mature planted

I've partnered with my lfs and bought a batch of crystal reds, blue pearls and snowballs. Hopefully in a few months if all goes well I'll have my own colonies. The lfs is a long time friend of mine and he gave me 4x20gal tanks to use in the back of his store.

Wow, you have a really cool shrimps! They seems to be hard to breed even among Sulawesi shrimps (http://www.shrimp-tank.com/sulawesi-shrimps).

Is there a thread or something where you share your experience?

hey Al. any updates? I'm almost done with my setup to get some crs. I got a source with good grades S+-SS for cheap, well relatively speaking. I've been getting into shrimp more and more and i would ultimately like to work my way up to some blue pandas or blue bolts.

check them both out here (http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/tank-journals-photo-album/118206-rickztahones-55-10s-project-update-12-a.html)

Hi Skip....there's always a learning curve............CRS has so many grading .......understanding the grading b4 you buy them........I like the Black King Kong......US $200 each lol

05-22-2011, 02:34 PM
yea.. i am just noticing. there are LOTS Of types.. of course, there are!! LOL>.

but i have seen the fluval shrimp tank.. seems kind of cool..

$200 for a 1" shrimp.. yea.. not.. LOL>.

i would get an adult fire red from HANS before that.. LOL!

but its peaked my interest.. so i am going to lookin into the water/care for red cherry shrimp.. they seem pretty easily available :)

To be honest i did the whole "dive" into RCS and it didnt work so well lol. i spent well over $250 on super nice high grade shrimp and only about 5/30 survived the 1st 2 months. They are very much like discus ive found. They like a mature tank, no high speed chases in their area or kids banging on the glass. STABLE water temps is where i had some major issues was a big one. Not hard really i guess, just like discus...take some reading before hand and dont rush them lol. But as of late ive just been doing the blue pearls and red cherrys with some wild endlers along with them in 10g tanks. They are super fun to watch and very prolific so you always feel excited seeing all the shimplets everywhere!!! If i were you id get some red cherry shrimp, or A/S grade CRS as they are hardier so you can learn without large loss in case anything happens are you learn how the shrimp/your water work out. Youll know withing a month-ish if theyll be breeding and if theyre happy and then figure throw down the dough for the SSS big dawgs lol. Thats just how id suggest to do it. Dont rush it, do a little reading. Just remember the higher the grade CRS the more fragile they are, so start lower grade and work up with experience is my 2 bits

got some little ones and i got quite a few other mommas berried now. so in a month or so i will be selling off packages of A+ to S+ on here for those that showed interest. I will be keeping SS's and SSS's for breeding stock. Soon i will be adding hybrid stock and the prices will jump significantly though. So if you want cheaper CRS i'd get them from my first batch and not down the line :D.
