What was the source of the turqs? What type of turqs? How old/what size were they when you received them? How long have you had them?

thanks everyone for the replies!

I got these fish about 6 months ago from Gabe Posada. They were about a year old when I got them and they have grown about half inch maybe since then. When I got them only one had a trailer, now all but one have really nice trailers. They are in the 6" range.

Awesome tank and man oh man do Discus look phenomenal when they are in a group and same type!

That Amano guy was the one that inspired me and I fell in love with the Red Spotted Leopard - when I saw one of his setups with a group of Leopards just swimming together!!

I'm trying to breed my pair just to get a group like that and relive the experience for real this time!

oooooooeeeeeeeeee!

Thanks for the info jball! Good to see Gabe putting out that quality. I'd take them any day.

Like Tito, I prefer one strain/type tanks. They are so clean and impressive, especially when they are all the same size. I could spend quite a few days looking at your tank. ;)

GORGEOUS!

I too favor single strain schools.

Your background is stunning especially combined with the sand substrate. Mind if I ask where you got the background?

Thanks all. I spend hours before falling asleep just staring at it. I don't even know why I have TV anymore. I'm also a fan of one strain tanks, I think it looks more natural.

I got the background from aquariumhabitats.com

Yea I get eggs from two different pairs every couple of weeks. I dont really have plans on breeding though. Im actually hoping they will get over the breeding stage soon as It makes for a more relaxing tank.

LOL, always! No, it was just to see where the fish came from and at what size. Somebody (Gabe) is doing some outstanding things growing fish out like that. ;)

Really nice tank Jball!!!

Just curious... Where those fish purchased locally (in south florida)?

jball1125
08-31-2010, 11:23 PM
Yea. Gabe's Hatchery is located down here in Miami.

I see you live in South Florida. If you are interested in his fish, send me a PM and I will give you his number. Gabe is a great guy to work with.

Wow, your fish & tank are fantastic! I like the simplicity of the wood & anubias, beautiful background but nothing takes away from those stunning fish. Is the background hard to clean? Are your filters & heater behind it?

Thanks. I have bother filters and both heaters back there. I don't get any debris whatsoever in the back and I don't clean the actual background.

Sorry to be dense but how does the water circulate to the back of the background?

Sorry to be dense but how does the water circulate to the back of the background?

On the top left corner you might notice a bunch of anubias on the wall. Thats really a doorknob sized hole. I have the exhaust of the canister filter set up facing towards the whole so it creates circulation towards the front of the tank. I think that does the sufficient job of keeping the water clean. The poop and other stuff off the floor gets cleaned with good ol water changes. The tank has been set up for about a year now with the discus for about 6 months and I have never had water quality problems. I think the system works, but only more time will tell if it causes any problems.

Snapped a couple pics under the new light bulb. Not sure I dig it. If only I hadn't sat on my old bulb I could switch it back :/

Anyway, any recommendations on bulbs would be nice :)

Thanks... :) I have wanted to add a couple sterbais for a long time, but, my tank has been 100% problem free and Im paranoid about introducing new fish that might contain some type of bug/parasite.

Prazi doesnt kill everything and then I would have to worry about using separate equipment and all that hassle. I guess Im too lazy.... Ill be fine without the sterbais. lol

I'm actually curious about something, how long have these backgrounds been around, and though siliconed to the tank, what r the odds of something nasty developing behind them and leaching back into the tank??

jball1125
12-09-2010, 09:37 AM
They have been around for a while. You do have to take precaution and keep things clean. Same way you would take precautions with canister filter or substrate for example.

I probably would have gone with a single strain, but with my wife and kids in the mix, picking and choosing too, it quickly became apparent we were going to have a variety! So, I have the Heinz 57 mix thing going on. Ah well. If the family is happy...:) Perhaps waaay down the road I'll change things up. But for now, that's how I roll. :p
