There are several other events in Duisburg in this period. Therefor almost all hotels are fully booked.

If you want a room right now you really have to contact a lot of hotels.

He's a great guy, not only for his knowledge of Discus but his personality is wonderful. He's really one of the nicest men in the Discus world I know and have talked to many times.

We're gonna do the interviews for this year on video which will be available at www.dph.nl and www.discus.info. As soon as the interviews are online I'll post here and on our FaceBook page.

Hi Vera,

As I understood well the train connection Duesseldorf - Duisburg is great. I personally haven't been on that train before so listen to others. The station in Duisburg is very central and all the hotels are gathered around there. Depending on the hotel it's max. 5 minutes walking.
The location of the show location is indeed quite remoted from the center. But a lot of Discus people are there by car and if you ask friendly most of them will give you a lift. Unfortunatly for you all seats of my car have been taken..

The programm of all the lectures is available at www.discus.info.

Something about this fish is just eye catching, the sheen with its colors are Simply Awesome!

I have to say I am not that impressed with the chosen winners. I guess its to each their own, but I can pick out flaws in most of those fish that would seem to disqualify them early on yet they are picked as winners at a pretty prestigious show.

I guess im getting really picky now days but I believe everyone does this when it comes to something they get more involved with and really have an interest in. We are always striving to have the best of everything so I suppose I am in the category where I will never be happy, I hope I can get out of that mind set as I dont see it healthy in the world we live in! lol

I do like the wild fish, I thought there were nicer examples.
I like the spotting on the internet peoples choice but for some reason I dont like looking at that fish, maybe it is a bit irritating to my eyes with its pattern?
I cant argue too much with Ricky's first place fish, its really nice but I find I am not liking much anymore the larger sized discus, they strike me as overgrown and unnatural looking.
the most superior public fish has a clearly lumpy forehead, maybe the picture but it looks like it has nice finnage and consistent markings. not my favorite color choice though.

IMO of course
Thanks for the coverage

Looking at a fish in a picture doesnt give you a true representation of the fish IMO
The fishes are judged on more than just looks alone ie How the fish presents its self etc
Some of the fish were just draw dropping, be it the winners or not, but some not so......
Why not get yourself over there in 2 years time to judge for yourself how these fish look in real life, I had a great time and its not everyday you get to have a meal and a few drinks with the people who really are at the pinnacle of this great hobby ...........
Well done too all those who won awards ................ See you in 2 years

vera, how was the wood suspended in these biotopes?
Hi Dl , most probably its been in the water for long time i think owners of the tanks can tell u more on it, over here in Malta one particular LFS brings drift wood that sinks next day as put in the tank and realise ltl tannings if at all after a good wash- i couldnt believe my eyes to b honest , b4 i use to put driftwood in the water and put on it plastic bag filled with sand to keep it down for abt 2 months

Hi Fons.....what new from Eheim?....something like the Fluval G canister filters:)

New things from Eheim are small cannister filters, designed for nano tanks but imo also very usable in Qtanks.
New Nano tanks with integrated LED lighting and filtersystems.
New filters in the Large filter range, now with integrated heating systems.

At the Eheim website those new items are promoted.

Hi All,

I'm the administrator of the Discusportal.it web site.

We was on Duisburg with a small stand in order to present our discus breeders (Hobbysts and Professionist). In this occasion we have meet with a lot of peoples form several Countries, I hope that we have meet also with someone of this fantastic forum.

We had the occasion to meet Mr- Wattley, and I'm very impressed on his availability to discuss with us and our bad English ;).

He is a legend for our passion and thanks of his work we can see today very high quality of a Striped Discus.

I woul like to invite on our site were are published more that 500 pictures about the event and of course all partecipants pictures but i'm not sure if it is permitted by the administrator

For the moment the portal is only in Italian language but we are going to translate the major contents including the Duisburg reportage (hard work :)).

We will be present also on 2012, if you will participate again dont' forget to visit us to exchange two words with us, you are welcome.

Greetings from Italy at you all.

Wish I knew where to get those plastic cones stateside, I know Bill used to bring em in years ago...Basically the fish must have something to hide behind ... very odd, don't think we will be doing that at our show.

The cones were supplied by a company called Tropical, from Poland.

I'm not easily impressed. Some of the discus were very good fish, some were not, IMO. Example: the 2nd place winner in the wild green catagory. The fish looks diseased to me. Look at the anal and dorsal fins. On you tube, it looks completely different. Wish I could have been at the show in person. I love looking at large numbers of discus in the same room. They do look different "live".

I'm a little disappointed with myself. the show is only 120 Km from my home and I didn't go. I didn't know about it in time. well there's always next time right?

Unfortunately, that was the last of those discus shows in Duisburg. Must be because of the high costs to hold the event and because of the terrible world economy. That's too bad. I always wanted to go too.

Nope, has nothing to do with it. Norbert Zajak did those shows more or less to get (new) customers to that show and to his store (the rest of the year after the show) to many people came to that show, ran of with the prize money and he only saw them back 2 years later for next show. That's more or less the reason in short why he quit with it,

That's a shame Hans, it was a great event and appeared successful to an outsider like me. Over the weekend it was so busy with people you could barely move in the place. Hopefully someone will pick up the discus championship part of the event and incorperate it into another worthy event. Be a pity to see the discus competition go under as well.

I know Rod, and the word is he's going to quit with the in between (cichlids etc) show too, this one had normal (if I'm correct) about 45,000 visitors.

Looks like he quits with all shows,

Hans

Latest news, Zoo Zajac is gonna quit all the shows, not only Discus, Cichlids, Guppies & others.

The general aquarium show on which the Championships & other events normally took place is going to end. Last edition will be in 2012. At the 2011 edition there were about 24,000 visitors...
