Most of these Koi and or Gold Fish are four years old. I'm hoping the smaller ones 7 inches or so will grow still, but the big ones get first dibs on food.

Due to a leak in the liner in 2008, the pond had a makeover during the replacement of the liner. I'm not too thrilled with the waterfall's construction, but the great thing about makeovers...you can do another one....LOL!

Hope you like...

Great pond David. I am hoping to do one of those this spring. It def. gave me some ideas. Any issues with the wildlife around your house, or winter time in PA?
Thanks,
MikeF

Very nice pond David! And nice clear water, I battle green water all the time even with my UV light. It is so hot and sunny here, the algae just love it all. And I have 10 large koi in 2000 gal, they need much more. Thanks for showing us the pics!

Yep..they're pretty healthy sizes. They used to be so shy, but now they've grown up to be proper beggers...LOL!

I bought all these koi and gold fish when they were small, but they turned out pretty good. I now want a bigger pond the length of my front yard where the flag pole is....LOL

The largest of the bunch is huge...IMO... I don't know what I'd do if he ever decided to jump out of the pond.

No issues with the wild life per se...at least not after I put the metral sculptures up, which seem to keep the Egrets or other large birds that would clean out a pond quickly.

I have no idea how big in gallons my pond is. I always thought they couldn't grow past a certain point depending on the volume of water. I may be wrong. I think next summer a makeover is in order or a second pond....LOL!

Cook him. A fish that size can feed a small village. LOL j.k

You have a very beautiful house by the way.

Great shots David!

I've been thinking about a pond for the back yard. It's just not on the priority list at the moment. Did you build this yourself?

Best wishes!

I recently sold all my koi due to raccoon problems and Blue heron problems, Yep, blue herons have invaded Colorado. So I filled in the larger pond and just have an 8x10 now with no fish and little maintenance. I miss my big moby though sometimes. He was about 24 or so inches. I wish you were here David, I would take you to a dealers place where you could see some that are about 30 inches. And the quality of the fish he sells is outstanding. you'd be going home with Koi! I will try to get pics this week for you

Got to lose the gravel Dave! :D Three of your Koi look like the came right out of my pond. Not into the longfins (butterfly)? They look good though. What size is your biggest? How deep is that pond?

Thanks Chad! The first time was a professional installed by Dreamscapes, but the second was a general handyman type with little experience. The waterfall now looks too much like a DIY home grill that somebody is pumping water through....LOL...hate it personally!

I will be doing the next makeover. I'll be much better at the design/decorative work now that I have all the functional design aspects down.

Sounds great! Can't wait to see pictures.

At our local mall, there is an OutDoors World anchor store. They have a huge display approximately 18'x150' on their end of the mall that has a couple of different pond enclosures separated by a water fall and simulated rock formations that include stuffed deer, bear & cub, raccoons etc. I believe they have various trout in their pond, but I want to do something similar in my front yard..LOL...I wish!

Curious...why do you say no to the river rock? I'm not sure how I ended up with the butterfly pot-bellied gold fish, but they're different. I think the Gold one is having bladder issues. Given it's been floating upside down at the top of the water most of the time then after resting turns itself over and swims about normal. Not sure what to do for it yet.

The biggest is the least pretty IMO...in pic #5. I'd have to measure to be positive, but he is at least 27"-29" TL and FAT....LOL! The pond ranges in depth 8" ledge to 3' below the waterfall, so the survive the winters.

It's pretty much the same argument as why we like to keep discus in bare bottom tanks. The river rocks traps deitrus/ debris which can build up organics etc etc.

Do you mean your Watonai/Ryunkin gold fish?

LOL... if you say so. It's not like the local stores get too particular about their labels. So where are your pond pictures my friend?

David your pond, yard, and house are all beautiful. I would love to have a pond but with the raccoons, birds, and bears around here the koi would be sushi.

Thank you Chris! Too bad about not being able to have a pond. The previous owner had trouble from time-to-time with birds and I did as well for the first year. Knock on wood, I haven't had any trouble since I put up the metal sculptures next to the pond. We have had news reports of bears coming into neighborhood yards, but I think because Interstate 81 is within shouting distance and our street gets regular traffic it may protect us a bit more. Fortunately, the traffic noise is at a minimum.

Now THAT is a serious Koi pond DL! Makes my little 2000 gal pond look like a kiddie pool! Very nice, do you still have it? Bet all that equipment cost a bundle to run each month. Where are your koi now?

NOOO! this not my pond, this is the pond at the dealers place. I used to have a large pond but it was sooooo much work. Filled it in, built smaller pond and we sold all our koi and just have a small pond now. Less mantainance than my discus, lol. Anyway David is someday planning new pond for his front yard and I mentioned I would get pics, but since I went that route I got the specs for him too. All the plumbing is housed in a decorative shed(overkill) but hey.....Anyway this dealer gets KILLER koi! :)

ps be happy you have little pond!

sorry to say we have a different predator. Possible raccoon family that lives next door. But I've sold all the koi so just a few ornamental goldfish that can survive outside. I figured I should get the specs too for you so you know what would be needed for your new project. I want to see pics when you start it!:) Just so I can be envious you know!:D

Definitely a Spring project, which gives me the fall and winter to come up with a design that will work in my space. It sure will beat having to ride the tractor around to mow....!
