My brothers jaguar rays gave birth to there first pup this weekend. The parents are a 15" female and 13" male. The pup was born sometime friday night and is about 4" and eating earthworms right now. Here are some pics of the parents and baby. My brother very excited since so many people told him they were not mature enough to start breeding. Guess they were wrong

As soon as he seen the baby he quickly moved it to the top of the tank. He has it in a clear plastic container he was afraid the parents might harm the baby.

My brother was telling me that most of the time they have there first pups they just have one. But after that they can have 3-5 pups each litter. Not sure how easy they are to breed this is his first time at this and he wasn't expecting this to happen. Most of the other big ray people out there in the world told him his rays weren't mature enough to start breeding but it happened.

I can do that :D

That's just way cool!!!

I know it isn't even my rays but I was just as excited as he was when I got over there Saturday morning and seen it. I have a male hystrix and this pup is a female. So I already have claimed it for my tank but not so sure my brother is going to give it up that easy.

Do rays normaly care for their young? Just wondering if he separated it from the parents because the parents will harm it or because the parents are too immature to be trusted with it.

He told me he was afraid they would harm it. Just like you see discus eat there eggs or free swimmers sometimes. He was worried something like that might happen.

Ed,

Do you keep your rays all by themselves? What is a minimum size tank that they need to be in and with what types of other fish do you keep them with?

I really do want one..

Somehow I missed this:angry:

Congratulations... now the chalenge is to keep them breeding:)

IME the babies are not at risk from the parents (dont know about other rays, though I did have 2 groups of parents & pups in the same tank without problems).... well the problem was feeding enough and keeping the water clean enough:D

more pics please:D

Between my brother and I we have 10 rays. 1 in a 120 gallon tank, 3 in a 8' x 2' x 2' pond, and 6 in a 220 gallon tank. Depends of type of ray you get and the size it will grow but I wouldn't go with anything smaller then a 125. And that would be for 1 maybe 2 rays max. They require a lot of water and room to swim. And for the type of fish to keep with them will be anything they can't fit in there mouth and eat. Don't expect to be putting tetras in there unless you want to wake up the next morning and find a empty tank.

That is because there is not a lot of information out there about them.
