Albino RSG x Albino Leopard Snakeskin Fry

Wanted to show my most recent project I have been working on
Got these Albinos from Kenny in July, it has been a privilege to work with another high quality fish. Ever since I was a kid I've loved albinos. This has been alot of fun!
They are 2 1/2 weeks old w/foster parents. The mother is the Leopard Snakeskin & the father is the Red Spotted Green

Noob-y question but ive been out of the game a long time and am just getting back in and for the life of me can not remember the name of the fish that are parenting the babies. Anyone care to refresh me?!

Very nice Chad!!! That pair is really nice and great shape for Albino's, and nice to have a good pair to foster them. That is a very nice batch of fry, and good size for there age, anyone who has raised these guys out knows how much slower they grow, but these guys seem to be growing as fast as some non Albino's. Aww Man! These guys are growing fast. At 3 weeks I see no difference of these than regular non-albinos!

You will learn, LOL. Albino parents can be tough to get fry to attach.

When discus are hatched the parents turn dark with the production of the mucus that fry will feed off of. This darkening is intentional and this is what the fry look for in order to find the parents and attach. With albinos the parents do not turn dark and the fry have a difficult time locating them to attach. While it is possible to get fry to attach to albino parents it is not a given and can involve extra work and numerous attempts. I believe it is Chad's intent to eventually work on getting the fry to attach to the actual parents but he wanted to take the more sure method of using foster parents to make sure he got the first batch to grow out.

Hey Skip, Great questions & thank you for asking.
As many people have explained, typically Albino parents can have a little trouble raising their fry. Discus are very interesting, in that they don't care where the eggs came from, if they see a clutch of eggs they will immediately start caring for them. They will produce excessive slime coat and all! This is the best set of parents I currently have & that is why I am having them raise them. No tricks, just awesome, high quality fish!

I agree Larry, I believe that one of the biggest hurdles actually has to do with the physical attributes of the fry more than the parents

I introduce the eggs to the foster parents usually within 4-5 hrs of being laid

As for me, I did have a sub-adult female Pearl Pigeon and an adult Hi-bodied Leopard (both also from Kenny) pair up and lay on driftwood last week, but they ate the eggs a few hours later...maybe during the Xmas break I could give them their own tank and see what happens.

Anyway, great work as always, you have the magic touch! Yet another excuse for me to come over for a visit :)

Yeah the water is pretty soft. I use aged tap water treated with Seachem Safe. Ph usually runs around 7.0-7.2.

Awesome. Same pH, I hit 7-7.2 as well. Water here is hard though, 300-350ppm. At least they won't have to endure a pH and hardness swing. What do you normally keep your tanks at?
