It depends entirly on the stocking level and type of filter you're using. If it's a good sized sump/trickle filter then yes. If it's a single Hydro 5 in a fully stocked 55g, then no.

you can never OVERFILTER.. i have two hydro 4 filters and aquarclear 50 working on my 55g

+1. I totally agree with both of you. As I also run 2 AQs on both of my tanks, with great results.

Certainly one filter on a 55g is OK if, as the other commenters say, depending on the type. A good canister filter rated for that size, or larger, will easily take care of the bio load. But I also agree that two filters is better than one. If one malfunctions, you still have at least half a bio filter, and so your fish won't suffer. And if you're like most of us when we started, you'll keep getting more tanks, more filters, and so you'll not regret having two!
