The only fish I would ever keep with discus from the list would be dwarf cichlids, but not every species.

Have you ever noticed that some of the best discus tanks just have a school of discus and a school of tetras and thats it? There is something about that combination that makes a discus tank stand out.

+1, i had an elephant nose for years with my discus, no problems. Some species of knifefish should be ok, angels with very large discus ok, pantadon should be fine, some dwarf cichlids species fine, killifish maybe but never tried it, clown loach and bala shark never in a discus tank.

Sorry, force of habit. Thats what butterfly fish are called in the trade. Very cool fish, i kept a group for many years.

Although not indigenous to discus habitat, the blue and gold rams are ideal tankmates for discus. I discourage keeping fish from different water parameters with discus, which would include elephant nose, African species from muddy, alkaline waters with poor eyesight, which usually means the fish can be aggressive. It is the same with knifefish (most) species.

As for other species of dwarf cichlids, research species that live in rivers that discus live in in the wild.

I have Clown loaches with my Discus and they couldn't care less. Both parties completely ignore the other. I also had 3 Yoyo loaches, but one was a TOTAL pig and I finally returned him to the LFS. He was a real bother at feeding time and would out compete the Discus for food. The other two don't care about the Discus either and are not pigs at feeding time so for now, they will stay. They all have plenty of room to roam in my 155g. I think it may boil down to the personalities of the fish. I also have 18 Rummy Nose Tetra's, 4 German Blue Rams, 3 Clown pleco's and a Red Tail Shark. The Red Tail will chase the Rummy Nose from time to time but shows no interest in the Discus. Just my observation with my aquarium.

I don't care to have any snails in an aquarium, but I did have nerite snails for awhile. Snails may be host to parasites ime maybe just tales but no chances here

Of those fish, I have with my Discus: Upsidedown cats (2) hardly see them as they usually hang out upside down under the driftwood :p, Rummy Nose tetra's (18) and Clown plecos (3) because they stay small, 3 inches max and are EXCELLENT algae cleaners! I personally wouldn't add any other Cichlids to the mix. Did you know Discus are part of the Cichlidae family?
