hello beautifull tank and fish!
i see you live in south florida. where did you get those two fish?

Brevcom

I live 2 miles from where there farm raised,(Vero Beach, Fl) incredibly lucky!

This is my first attempt at keeping them and these folks at: http://angelwingsusa.com/index.html are super nice people! They have Discus there that were fantastic and huge as well.

I agree, beautiful tank and fish. However if those white rock are limestone rock I would suggest removing them. Also discus are quite clumsy and could really hurt themselves on those rock. BTW, nice to see some Florida folks. I'm in Orlando.

Sweet setup! I considered doing river rock for my substrate but I saw so many members had suggested sand I figured I would work with that. My biggest concern was waste finding its way in between the rocks and having a difficult time getting it out. How is that working out for you and what are you doing to keep it clean? Thanks!

No flash...the camera is a Canon EOS Rebel XT, 3 yrs old, but it takes great photos.

Wow nice tank, fish look good too!

I would be concerned about the rock in there though(the big white ones). I am assuming they are not going to raise the ph?

I found out first hand that river rocks really make keeping the tank clean hard. Discus are slow eaters. They let a good amount of food drop to the bottom of the tank and these easily find their way to places in between rocks. These are very hard to siphon out and they rot in the tank. As a result, bacteria could bloom uncontrollably. I personally ran into this situation. It took about a month for the situation in my tank to worsen to a point that 3 of my 6 discus started to develop health problems. One of them stopped eating while the other two had some sort of infection on their body. I immediately removed most of the river rocks and managed to siphon out a disgusting amount of food and fis waste that were concealed by the river rocks. All the "sicked" discus recovered within 2 days after the cleanup. River rocks are nice but i just can't see myself using these in my discus tank.

I see your point, but I do regular water changes and siphon the river rock every other day to make sure I don't have any "sick" fish. It's more work but I like it and the fish seem to like it as well. I'm going today to get 2 more Discus, i'll post some shots of them later today.

I have clown loaches in my tank and they do a prety good job eating the left overs from the discus and cleaning between the rocks eating anything they could find.
I also have a few small marbled crayfish (self cloning) hiding around and they help keep the tank clean and when they reproduce its a nice snack for the discus and clown loaches.
Just a thought.

Looks good, but seeing all those rocks in there makes me cringe! Experience over the years have taught me the fewer things that touch the bottom, the better. Good luck!

I liked it as well, but it was holding way to much waste & un-eaten food. It had to go.

I stopped by my local breeder and picked up 2 more fish today, I really like these 2. They add a nice contrast in color to the school.

Barb,

Everyone of my Discus has come from the same breeder ...I was told if this was the case that QT wasn't necessary. Is that the case or should I be concerned?

RudeDogg1

it makes no difference if they came from the same source or someone you trust ALL new tank mates be it discus, tetra, loaches ect should be QT for 4 - 6 weeks befor adding

Brev, in this case I think you will be fine, I would not worry about the QT this time. In most cases you should quarantine, but they are from the same place and they are not being shipped long distances so the new fish should be only slightly stressed.

Good luck and nice Tank/Fish!

Mary and her mom are good people. You'll be impressed with there Discus ...remember this when your there, mom makes all the decisions on what fish get sold. There not just fish to her, there her pets and she loves them dearly.

Here's a updated version of the tank. It's come a long way from the first time I started this project to now. I've received a lot of great advice through this forum on setup and maintenance. I really appreciate that and so do the discus! :)

The tank looks fantastic! I personally don't like the pot on the left corner or the driftwood on the right because they dont match the layout. If you get creative you can build pots for your plants from the same river rocks. Just a little silicone and stacking and it should look great. Just my 2 cents. Anyway great tank!

Great idea ....That will look very unique when completed. What type of silicone would you recommend? Just your standard aquarium silicone?
