Last Saturday I combined my planted and bare bottom tanks into one 125g show tank. I took all the bio media, being HOBs and sponge filters and placed them on the tank to cycle it. I also started a brand new eheim and all is well. How long should I leave the HOBs and the sponge filters on the tank to make sure that the eheim is established?

Thanks in advance.

the bio media already have the bacteria needed to run the tank.. you can move your fish into that tank... have you been running the Established filter/bio media in a new tank WITHOUT FISH?

I'd give it a couple weeks then gradually remove 1 filter at a time. Will you be running more than just the Eheim? I would...

I put the dither fish in the tank the first day. The discus went in after running it for 24 hours. They are doing great. The do not like all the HOBs on the tank....lol

I was planning on doing one HOB and the eheim. Do you think I should run something different?

I also have a 125 g show tank. I use two Eheim canister filters, one a 2026, the other a 2028. I always think that if one filter (or filter head) breaks, I've still got the other one. Also, I think the advise for removing one HOB filter at a time, after a few days, is good.

2-3 weeks.

I don't have Eheims but I like 2 filters on all but the smallest of tanks. That way 1 can be cleaned more thoroughly without losing much beneficial bacteria & you always have 1 if 1 should break. How many HOBs have you got on it now? If the return flow seems too much you could try modifying it (them) with PVC pipe to divert the flow. It may not be the most aesthetic approach for a show tank however...

I am running 2 HOBs three sponge filters that I would like to remove and an Eheim 2217. I do not want to use the HOBs and am wondering what filter would be best to run with the 2217 on a 125 gallon planted tank.

Thanks,
Mishka

Don't mind me just trying something out.
