My Aro jumped out of his tank today, and lost a few scales/got a few hefty scratches on the way out. Is there anything else I should be doing for him besides clean water?

Hope he is going to be ok. Good that you were home to find him.

Clean water and maybe a little bit of salt. He should recover fine. You need a strong cover for sure. A buddy of mine has an Aro that took the cover with her on the way to the floor.

I found that out this afternoon, Hendri! HAHA The tank is covered, but it's just thin glass. He knocked the one piece into the tank on his way out. I'll have to find something else. Or maybe build a wooden frame with some kind of screen.

When I had my 28" silver, I laid 2- 4"x 4"s over the tops down the full length of the tank. It worked great! This was a glass tank. On an acrylic tank, you can drill holes to install nylon bolts that hold latches that latch the tops to the tank. The fish should be fine. They are tough suckers! ;)

Thanks guys. He didn't eat this morning, but that's not necessarily uncommon for him. Now if he goes more than a few days, I may start to worry.

For now, I threw some 2x4s I had in the garage over the glass on the tank. It's not perfect, but it'll work until I can come up with something else this weekend.

weights are a good start but with aros there are lots of variables such as tanks mates, something startling it, etc. What type of aro now that you've talked about it its picture time!!

Tank size can make them jumpy too. If the fish feels cramped in the tank, often they will try to jump out.

they jump at night time, turn on the light all the time.

They will jump at anytime. The only reason the "lights on theory" makes any sense, is that you can spook the fish easier with the lights out. Leaving the lights on 24/7 is not good for the fish.
