I have a large piece of wood that used to be in a planted tank that I had. It has been left outside and got rained on for a week and change. Is there anyway I can sterilize the wood so that I can use it again? I do not have a pot big enough to boil it in.

Thanks in advance.

Mishka,

I would think it was aquarium safe prior to pulling it out???
If this is the case, just a week or two outside would not justify boiling it. I would just rince or power wash it with hot water and you should be good to go.
It may need to be water logged again so it sinks.

Thanks Ralph! I was just worried about mold and stuff like that.

I wouldn't be too worried about a week. I did however have some that I left out for over a year and it leeched some chemicals into the water and all the fish in that tank went south. It took months for them to get back to normal. :(

Eddie,

Are you trying to freak me out? I live in California. God knows what we have in the air, let alone in the rain.
I am now looking for new wood...lol

No, don't worry, mine was over a year outside.

You could allways disolve some PP in a bucket of hat water and pour it over the wood let it soak for 10 mins or so and rinse off. Thats what I did after soaking mine for 2 months outside and it still leaches tannins lol.

Can anyone tell me how much PP to dissolve in water to sterilize my wood?

Thanks

Just soak it in some bleach water overnight. Rinse, and leave outside a few days until completely dry. Won't hurt a thing. I've cleaned aquarium gear in bleach for decades. Easy, and very effective. Bleach goes away when exposed to air for a while.
