After watching some videos about the flooded Amazon forest, I wanted to recreate in a planted aquarium. Should look a whole lot better when the stem plants in the back and sides reach the top of the water. I am planning on stocking with a school of Hyphessobrycon amandae. Any suggestions on other types of fish????

Looks great. You gonna put wild discus in it?

Thanks, I know its not really a biotope, more of a minature.

Thanks. No discus, Just some very tiny tetras. Ember tetras get only about 2 cm. Keep the scale right. I actually want the plants to grow tall and stemmy to look like tree trucks etc. Discus I will keep in my fishroom, they would not fit in this 29 gallon tank.

Looks real cool Scott! I like it! Small fish would make it look best, giving the illusion of the "trees" being bigger than what they are...Bill

You captured the "image" of the flooded forest, even the background adds to the illusion!! Great job sir!!!

Appreciate the input. I cant wait to see how it looks with my tiny tetras.

Thats quite a compliment. I really like the idea of a couple or three hatchets. I like them but have never owned any. I will update after plants grow. It should look more forest like with most of the growth near the top. I have 13 tanks but believe it or not this is the only one not in the basement and not bb. I missed having a planted aquarium.

I had forgotten about GBR. They are one of my favorites. I am for sure getting at least one of them if not a pair.

Thanks for looking. I actually just used one of the tanks I have already painted for pair of discus from when I renovated my fishroom. All of my tanks have that background paint:)

That looks great. What kind of wood is that?

It is actually some old dried vine of some type. I guess it in non toxic as my Scarlett Badis and variety of shrimp are loving life among the plants and seem very healthy. I guess its now more of an Indian flooded forest rather than an Amazon forest with the Badis Badis. lol

Yeah, but noone else will know that.

I might have to borrow/steal/adapt that style. I think I prefer the straight up and down lines rather than the gnarly multi-direction manzanita, at least I do in my upstairs tank, plus it could go really nicely with the background I want to get, which is also mostly vertical elements.

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments and ideas. I added 8 scarlett badis (dario dario) and 6 shrimp of different colors. I want to keep very small fish in this tank. I will probably add something else when the scarlets get bigger. They are so small that the first day after I got them they had all disappeared. I found them in the HOB filter. I fixed that with nylon stocking.

For some reason I have always been drawn to those tanks that have very small fish that I sometimes cant even identify. Just mysterious I guess. I will update when the tank begins to look different as plants and fish grow etc.

I attached to bottom with silicon and held til dry witha board laid across top.

I really like the concept and design of your aquscape!! The close-up pics look like I'm snorkeling in the jungle! :) Very cool.

One suggestion: Do some cable management - e.g. tie the cords behind the legs of your stand so that all the attention is on your aquascape! :)

Very difficult to get pictures of these little boogers. They are so tiny. Act like small cichlids, territorial and flaring fins and gills at each other.

I love it too! The little loach looks like young botia kubotai. Warning: I bet your shrimp won't be safe forever. (& they really are happier in groups) I think with all those species you may have to rename it Asian Forest, lol.

Did say you what kind of wood that is? Sorry if I missed it.

Yeah its more like Asian Forest ( i actually mentioned that too I believe) I was just inspired from watching some videos about the flooded Amazon forest. Scarlet Badis from India I think, and rainbowfish fro Australia? Weird mixture. Most plants people use are not from Amazon either. I agree loach happier with others and will eventually eat shrimp and snails. (already found one munched on) He is very tiny and grows slow so I will keep in here for a while longer. The wood is some very dry vine I found in my backyard.

That is awesome. Way better than mine. I looked it up and I see there have actually been many similar entries in that contest every year that imitate forest. I guess not so original idea. Man those are some fantastic planted tanks in that contest. I would love to see them in person. Wonder if the y can really be kept as a real tank for long period of time?

Nope. Those tanks are set up, grown out a little bit and then photographed and torn down. can you imagine trying to do maintenance on that?

Love the tank!! It really does look like a flooded forest. BTW, the rainbowfish are (originally) from Celebes (Sulawesi) Island in the South Pacific, near Papua New Guinea. They already have great color too!

Great job Mate,
