Oriental Reds LFS

[Eddie]

Picked these 2 up from the LFS today. Originally I only wanted one of them but upon further examination, I am 99.9% sure they are a pair. I was able to talk the guy down on these 2 for a price you could not even imagine! The female is the nicely shaped one with less striations. The male could definitely be better in shape but I figured what the hell, I'll work with these. I'm adoring the female! They've already started dancing in the tank. I'm assuming a day or 2 and they'll spawn. ;)

Thanks Vera, I KNOW, very nice for the LFS. They sometimes get in some decent discus from time to time but very HIGH in price. They had a bunch of real ugly juvies in the tank with these 2 and I was very surprised on how low these were in price. At first I didn't think much about them but I couldn't keep from investigating the female. LOL ;)

Yeah, I went out on a limb. LOL I don't think they are golden based, they really look more of a kool-aid red in person. In the pictures they appear more brown than they really are. I don't think they are pigeon based either so I am at a loss. They may just be brown based and heavily color fed with red or possible hormoned from the redness in their fins. The fins should be clear, no color at all unless they are fed color enhancing foods or hormoned. I guess we'll find out which one it is after a while. They in some serious QT at the moment. The tank they are in, is actually pink so.....just imagine. :bandana:

Look good Eddie! I just hope if they are hormoned, that it did not sterilize them, the male mostly. They don't look too "juiced" up. You can always pair the female with something else if all else fails. You'll start to find out shortly!...Bill

Great looking fish Eddie! I have never even seen a discus in a LFS in New England (though I haven't looked around Boston). Hope these two work out for you.

well, considering he was just in Malaysia and bought none, I'm impressed with that in itself!

LOL, I know I know, the LFSs can surprise you at times but trust me, the effort isn't always worth it. I took a chance on these 2 and we'll see. They've responded very well to thier current QT and are even eating flakes. I'll deworm them in a few days and give them something to spawn on. LOL

I'll keep them on my usual diet of seafood mix with the poor mans red enhancing Paprika (always works well), tetrabits and red enhancing flakes. Might throw some of Mal's FD worms in the tank every now and then.

Yeahhhhhh, don't think he's going to live this one down. Though, Have to say, pretty sweet and Japan might have a whole other quality more easily and readily available to the LFS. None of the ones in my lfs look anything like discus at all.

Yes, I'm sure its probably a lot different buying discus in a Japanese LFS as opposed to one in the states. Heck, Eddie has posted discus from a hardware store that look better than any I see at my LFS. Those new "Oriental Reds" look very nice by the way. They are in good hands. Eddie you officially hyjacked this thread. My first Discus I bought was from a LFS . He is still a better fish than some of the really expensive fish I have bought from simply. Not that those fish are not stunning. I have also learnt the hard way not to buy from a fish shop. pain pain pain never again I still worry about what those fish left behind.

Great looking fish Eddie! I have never seen such fish at any lfs in my whole life. And I have been in lots of them. I bet a real discus keeper must have brought those in, maybe needed money or something. Lucky for you...

Its been such a long time, almost 7 years ago so I'll have to dig around for it. I don't wear one everyday but occasionally us guys can't fit EVERYTHING in our wallet. Things like cameras and phones start to crowd the pants so a small satchel is a good alternative. ;)

Thanks fellas! Yeah Hendri, thats the male. :) There is a leopard and a PE in the tank with them. Yesterday the PE and Leopard were doing runs on the cone. I have never been able to guess on the sex of either of them so hope to find that out soon. LOL The reds are just sitting watching.
